Amazing performance from Irwin, he's really hit form in this tourney...hopefully this will spark a series of better results for him as he's been very short of wins lately. He has a big serve and plays a serve-volley game, courts in Bath are pretty fast so things would have suited him a lot more than Sjisling who plays a baseline game...even so the Dutchman is ranked around 650 places higher inside the top 300 and he's in their DC squad !!
Surprised that the first set of the Bloomers match was so close ! Illingworth is playing well above his ranking of 1300ish atm. Surprised at Miotto beating the hard hitting Searle aswell but having played just 1 match in 2007 (and that was in mid-Jan) maybe Searle is a little rusty !
Seator did well to take 7 games off De Bakker who's already good enough to give Ljubicic a decent match. Smeets is erratic but has a good serve and is a very big hitter so Childs did well to get a set.
The Rushby loss is the most disappointing one...great chance for a ranking point but he loses 3 and 1 to some American ranked 500 places lower. Guess it makes Hewitt's loss to Cohen in the final qualies rd, not look so bad tho.
Richard Irwin [961] vs. Andreas Beck [377] of Germany

Can't see Bloomers dropping a set to Miotto
Hope Irwin can contine his form against the powerful but erratic Andreas Beck. 20 year old Beck who's a leftie was a top junior back in 2004, made the quarters of the US Open juniors. Last May he reached his career high of 176 on the mens tour. Best results so far this year are making the quarters and semis of two 10Ks in Germany
De Bakker or Scherrer next for Richard. Anyone know the result from this match yet. Would be good if Richard could win a few more matches and take the title, he's been a little short of wins recently.

Fast courts so I guess 1 break in each set did it, fairly routine win for Bloomers.
Shame about Irwin, Beck does like a target though....been a good tournament for Irwin though, first in a while, he's lost to a lot of lower rated guys though. Hopefully this isn't just a flash in the pan and he can build on it in coming weeks and get back into top 800 in the next few months. It's something which has happened a lot recently, likes of Brewer, Rushby, Bamford have all picked up the odd rd1 win in GB futures but haven't been able to do that consistently.
I know Matt Smith hasn't had many wins this year but I think he's got the class to become top 350 again, he and Morgan Phillips are the best chances of being the next Brit (currently in the 400-1000 ranking range) to make something of a breakthrough and go top 350 and higher. Smith has shown glimpses of it so far this year, had a couple of really good wins over players ranked 400ish down in Devon in February but for the most part, he's been unlucky with draws.
Great news for Bloomers with De Bakker going out, that's a massive upset. Scherrer is currently ranked 376 (has been as high as 220 back in 2004) and also knocked out the seeded big serving Aussie Adam Feeney in rd1. Scherrer's best results in 2007 before this week came in the Wroclaw challenger where he qualified. He also took a set off top 100 player Simon Greul at the start of the year in Auckland qualies.
Bloomfield has played Scherrer before. Bloomfield won 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a GB futures back in 2002.
