Elena Baltacha, Natasha Khan and Claire Ricketts all progressed to the 2nd qualifying round of this week's Tenerife 25K, joining 6th seed Georgie Stoop who had a first round bye
Baltacha was the most impressive, racing past compatriot Sarah Coles 6-4, 6-0 while Khan and Ricketts were made to fight a lot harder. Khan used her big serve to great effect in edging past Spain's Irene Rehberger (ranked 14 places lower at 441) 7-5, 7-6(3) while Ricketts recovered superbly from a first set drubbing to level the match at against France's Laura Thorpe (ranked nearly 600 places higher at 324) who then retired at 1-0 down in the 3rd.
All have much stiffer tests in rd2. Baltacha plays 13th seed Danica Krstajic who's ranked 305 and has been in superb form in the last couple of weeks, winning a 10K title in Germany, then qualifying for Gran Canerias and going on to reach the quarters.
Ricketts plays Belarussian 3rd seed Iryna Kuryanovich ranked 226. She made the semis of the Minsk 25K two weeks ago so it's likely to be too much of a step up for Claire.
Khan now faces Argentinian 14th seed Maria-Emilia Salerni who has been ranked as high as 95 (and 45 in doubles) but has now slipped to 306. They played earlier this year in Tipton, when Natasha outplayed Salerni for a set and a half but was unable to close it out and ended up losing 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Anne Keothavong (GB)(5) v Estrella Cabeza-Candela (Esp)(wc)
Horrible draw for Mel, Hlavackova may be ranked 33 places lower at 209 but she won this title last year, beating Mel 6-3, 6-4 along the way. Hlavackova's best result so far this year came in Sutton where she made the semis, beating Keothavong 6-4, 6-0 along the way. Anne gained her revenge in 3 sets a week later at Tipton, Anna Fitzpatrick also took a set off her in that tournament.
Borwell-Sakowicz is one which could go either way. The Pole is ranked 208 with a career best of 138, she did well to beat Ruutel in 3 sets last week in Gran Canerias before losing 0 and 3 in rd2. They've played once before, Sarah won 6-2, 6-1 indoors back in 2005.
Hopefully Anne is fit to play this week. Her opponent is 20 and ranked 237, reached rd2 last week. Seems to be a clay-court specialist, her best result in 2007 was qualifying for WTA Bogota in Columbia.
Natasha Khan tells me that it's been raining a lot in Tenerife so the matches have been pushed back quite a bit
Don't know any other results from today's rd2 qualies but unfortunately Natasha pulled her achilles against Salerni today and had to retire She hopes to be able to play next week.
Yeah, results from Gran Canerias were pretty dismal.
Anne or a qualifier is the best chance of a Brit making the quarters or further. Sarah has a winnable rd1 match but is then likely to play the 2nd seed
When we talk about our women they need to string good weeks together but that doesn't usually happen. Anne k. mel south and katie o'brien i feel haven't got going yet this year. They moved up well last year but the reality is they have to push on even harder now to progress. Mel badly needs a great week in singles to kick start her year otherwise it would be a shame to see her slip back.
i think Anne defending points from last years tournament where she reached the final, i think it was in Redding or that Cozstalozos(sorry the spelling!)
Qualies results (rd2 and rd3 were played yesterday due to the rain washing out play over the weekend):
Rd2:
I Kuryanovich (Blr)(3) bt C Ricketts (GB) 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3
E Baltacha (GB) bt D Krystajic (MNE)(13) 7-6(4), 6-3
M Salerni (Arg)(4) bt N Khan (GB) 3-0 ret
G Stoop (GB)(6) bt I Nossenko (Ukr) 6-4, 6-4
Rd3 (final qualies round):
I Kuryanovich (Blr)(3) bt E Baltacha (GB) 6-1, 6-0
G Stoop (GB)(6) bt V Chvojkova (Cze)(15) 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5)
As posted earlier in the thread, Natasha's retirement was caused by straining her achilles, she hopes to be fit again by next week though. Kuryanovich is ranked 224, about 700 places higher than Claire so she did extremely well to get a set !
Great rd2 win for Bally against an on-form opponent ranked 305....but what happened in rd3 ??? Hope it wasn't an injury just an off-match but I fear the worst as surely Bally would have got more games than that even if she had played poorly.
A really excellent performance from Georgie to qualify, Chvojkova isn't ranked much lower so that's a great win...must have only been a couple of points in it in the end. Georgie had beaten her last autumn so maybe that helped her pull through.
Just copying my earlier post down and adding a rd1 preview for Georgie
Main draw:
Georgie Stoop (GB)(q) v A Kerber (Ger)(3)
Mel South (GB)(7) v Andrea Hlavackova (Cze)
Sarah Borwell (GB) v Joanna Sakowicz (Pol)
Anne Keothavong (GB)(5) v Estrella Cabeza-Candela (Esp)(wc)
Georgie has got extremely unlucky, possibly the worst rd1 draw there is in this tourney. 18 year old Kerber is ranked 141 and won the title in Gran Canerias last week In February she also won a 50K in Canada and made the quarters of a 75K. They played last autumn and Kerber won 6-4, 6-1 in the Jersey semis.
Hopefully Anne is fit to play this week. Her opponent is 20 and ranked 237, reached rd2 last week. Seems to be a clay-court specialist, her best result in 2007 was qualifying for WTA Bogota in Columbia.

I agree, not many are able to produce consistently good performances over a number of months which is what's needed to make the top 100 and higher. Mel had that great run last June-July but since August she just wasn't in the same form...made a few quarters in weak 25Ks. Katie did really well last autumn, seemed to be finally consistently making the latter stages in some challengers...she's had a couple of v good wins this year but she's not playing as well as in the autumn...hopefully things will pick up for her and Mel again.
Anne K has been really hindered by injury problems, the wrist injury must be behind her inability to hold serve regularly atm.
The likes of Mel, Katie, Amanda, Sarah etc are too good to fall below the 250 mark but I fear they won't be able to get higher than about 150,....Anne and Bally still have the ability to make the top 100 for sure, hopefully things will come good for them.
It'll be interesting to see how Georgie does against top 150 and top 100 players this year and how well her game matches up against them. While Naomi's already shown she can compete with a top 20 player (Sugiyama), Georgie's yet to play anyone of that quality...going to be interesting following her results in the grass season
