I really feel that with David Felgate on board Naomi could start to do really well. She needs another good week now to keep her confidence high. She could really shoot up the rankings into the top 200 with a few more good weeks like last week. Naomi and Georgie are the ones to watch at the moment.
I agree he's a top class coach, I never felt that Felgate got the credit he deserved for his work with Henman...took him to the world's top 4, 3 slam semis and wins over the likes of Agassi, Rafter, Ivanisevic, Kraijcek, Kafelnikov, Pioline, Enqvist etc.
Henman was nothing like the same player under Stefanki...he didn't really get back to his best till he teamed up with Annacone.
Naomi is very excited to be working with Felgate, the arrangement is that he's her full-time coach and Nick Bollettieri supervises things.
The only worry this week is that she could run out of steam, 8 matches in the past week. However, a lot of those were 6-1, 6-1 or 6-1, 6-2 wins so hopefully she's still got plenty of energy in reserve.
Naomi's also a very good player on clay so she'll be looking to rack up the points in those challengers....she's going to be competing in the USA for another 2 months right up to the grass court season. After the clay 25Ks in Alabama and Mississipi, she's got a week off training in Florida with Bollettieri followed by two 50Ks on clay in May.
Also watch out for Anna Smith, Natasha Khan and Anna Fitzpatrick over the next few months. Now that most of her tournaments till June will be on clay/outdoor hard, she's got a good chance of racking up the points.
Great. Look forward to following her matches. Like i said i feel felgate/Cavaday could be like Felgate/henman which was fantastic and i agree never fully got the praise warrented. Time will tell.
I'm glad shes staying in the states for those 2 50k's on clay, i don't think they'll be super hard as most player will be over in europe for teh clay court season by then.
im confused! i know shes doing really well but on another thread, someone posted that she got to get some challengers in before the 24th April or something like that? or do you mean that shes finishing her juniors career by then?
Once she turns 18 she'll be able to play as many events as she wants. Until then she's limited to how many she can play, and generally if you are able to play at Pro level it's a bit of a waste not to use them.
OK, so Naomi will be able to play Redding, Alabama and Mississippi ?
If so, that's really good news.
She feels that she's got a lot more variety in her game now, her volleys and drive-volleys are improving so she's looking to come to the net more. She's also mixing up her pace from the back more and looking to construct the rallies and feeling comfortable doing so rather than feeling that she has to end the points quickly by taking risks with some big shots as was the case last summer.
Naomi says that she's not sure whether she'll play Roland Garros or not....interesting
