RE: Wimby Mens WCs

British Tennis magazine (June Issue 2007) spells out more succinctly how Wild cards will be given - Viz -

Play-offs will be for places in Wimbledon Qualifying

Wild card nominations for a 12-month record.

The LTA and the All England Club have agreed a new procedure for wild cards at Wimbledon.

Eight British men and eight British women will be awarded wild cards either into the main draw or qualifying. They will be selected by Paul Hutchins, Head of Men's Tennis and Carl Maes, Head of Women's Tennis, and will be based on the players' performances over the past year.

Wild Card play-offs will continue, but these will now be for places in the qualifying draw.

The playoffs will be at Raynes Park from 12-15 June.

Wild cards are places in the draw reserved for players whose current world ranking is not high enough for them to gain direct acceptance.
Most of them go to British competitors, but the All England Club reserves the right to award them to other players. Wild card play-offs were introduced by LTA Performance Director David Felgate in 2004. Those players who fell outside criteria for wild cards straight into the main draw were asked to prove themselves on court.

Paul Hutchins and Carl Maes have decided to put more emphasis on results over a longer period.

"We are confident of being able to put up the right names in the right order," said Hutchins. "It will be based on results over the year. Wimbledon is just two weeks of the year and the players are playing over 12 months. "So if any player is slacking, not at it 100 per cent or not playing enough tournaments, then he [or she] will not get put up on the wild card list."

Reading this is shocking....how in the world do some of these player survive? Take a Lee Childs who has been around for a while but never earning that much, how does he travel, sleep, eat, train etc while on the road so much earning so little. It would be cool to interview him and ask him.

Do they do clinics or something to make extra money? I know most of them are young and single etc....and the LTA are there, but these guys we follow and support, I really feel for them. Did Mac the knife retire in debt? Wimbledon is the only fat calf for them.....as someone said above....charity begins at home.....give the WCs to the Brits unless there is another Goran out there....then give it to him but after Tim has retired....lol

can anyone explain to me the difference in basing wc's on results on performance over the year and world rankings? considering that world rankings basically are the manifestation of a player's performance over the year!

its pretty much one and the same in my book! becuase they're hardly going to hand out WC's to people outside top 500 who have improved from having been outside top 100, for example!

currently we have 7 non retired top 500 player who would require wc's

boggo, bloomers, goodall, baker, marray, childs, auckland.

morgan phillips is the next one out. maybe this will be the list they submit?

Would Aucks want a singles wildcard?

Would someone just clear it up for me...the lta will nominate a list of 8 wilcards, and then Wimbledon will award these 8 players either a main draw or a qualies wildcard, whatever they decide. Then the remaining qualies wildcards will all go to a play-off tournament. Is that right? (sorry, it's just confusing! I doubt I'll properly understand it until I see it in practise in a few weeks time.)

i would assume so imo, i am guessing there are 16 total wc's available. i dont expcet all 8 MD wc's to go to brits to be honest. more like 5/6.

lets assume these guys: boggo, bloomers, goodall, baker, marray get them.

i think aucks would take a wimby WC if offered, i know we might think 'but its better for another player', but at the end of the day its also 10grand!

i wonder if qualy wc will go to overseas players? possibly in a few cases, lets say 2 of 8.

that leaves 6 WC qualy spots available. Either to be taken by the people who missed out on a md one and dont have QDA or via the play off.

Probably the younger players will get qualies ones.

Thiemo De Bakker will automatically get a qualies wild card.

why's that Arka? Did he win last years' Junior Wimby or something?

Thanks for clearing it up Count. I'd be very surprised (pleasantly so) if all 8 MD wildcards go to Brits. In the past has it been the lta or Wimby who've given them to foreigners (or both)?

i think some of the juniors definitely deserve qualies wildcards, which could be the flaw in this system. By choosing qualies cards only through play-off we could get a situation where (for example) Cox and Evans get drawn to play one another so they can't both get wildcards which would be shame.

Yeah, the Junior Slam winners get qualies wild cards in the next year's event. Klizan will get one in the French Open.

DOn't think they would give one to Aucks based on their criteria because he hasn't played singles for so long!

The Wimbledon doubles will be fun this year though. How many main draw wild cards are there for that?

Where did you hear that XCW4EVA? I would have thought he'd be more likely to play doubles than singles if he did play. Maybe Delgy could team up with him lol.
