Philippoussis gets wild cards because he is an ex-finalist, and I don't see anything wrong with that. The most exciting Wimbledon final ever came as a result of giving another ex-finalist a wild card (Goran in 2001).
And talking of that, the big G came to Wimbledon in 2001 on the back of 5 defeats in his last 6 matches. Could it be Tim's year in 2007!!!!
I reckon that Bloomfield (just) and Bogdanovic should get WC's, and no-one else. That means no women. No-one else has shown any sign of stepping up from Challenger level on a consistent basis.
"Charity begins at home" I completely agree with the first reply to The Times article which says:- "Financially tennis is an expensive game, unlike footballers who can be injured, e.g. Michael Owen and still get paid £100,000 a week, players outside the top 100 struggle to make a living as their income is performance based. These wild cards can help players secure a player for another 12 months on the circuit with the prize money they pick up in the first round. Tennis is an individual sport with no one to rely on. I support the LTA. Let's help not hinder "
By the way the first round prize money is NOT £20,000 as mentioned earlier in these threads but closer to £10,000 - how many flights hotels food etc. does this secure? - It certainly doesn't permit buisiness class travel and is far removed from the amount the LTA are now paying to those newly recruited coaches. Any player getting a WC will certainly not be able to sit back and enjoy a grand lifestyle on that money alone but it IS a 'springboard' to get to a few other tournaments without wondering if it can be afforded.
They said £20k for singles, doubles and mixed doubles

from the bbc artcile: The shortlisted players who miss out will enter a qualifying competition for places in Wimbledon's main draw.
now does this mean that they will go into the standard 128 Q draw (via a wc if necessay)? or is it similar to the current play off for 1 spot? to me that reads quite ambiguosly.
quiz question who played 45 matches in 7 weeks?
thats over 6 matchs a week so he(or she) must have been winning a lot of tournaments.

I think it must mean the standard qualy draw though I was equally confused when i read it. Otherwise it's the same as the old system surely?

I want to know that too.
Also is Hutchins willing to pay for the Brits to travel to the edge of the world to lose in the first round of a clay tournament? I don't see how that is the answer to all our problems.

Rubbish!
Singles first round losers money for 2006 was £9,830 for 2007 it has been raised to £10,000 exactly { ie. US $20k } (In fact even second round losers is now only £16,325)
Doubles first round losers money for 2006 was £5,000 PER PAIR for 2007 it has been raised to £5,050 PER PAIR - not enough to retire on is it?
Mixed Doubles first round losers money for 2006 was £1,180 PER PAIR for 2007 it remains the same

Must be Daniel Evans, i think it takes into account singles and doubles.
But you have to admire Rice, Evans and Cox for the amount they worked for those few weeks. Grinding away for a month and a half on an alien surface hundreds of miles away from your home isn't easy for 18 and 16 year olds.
However, comparing the cases of Juniors to pros is especially dumb. Most of these trips are funded by the LTA, where as players outside the top 300 in men's tennis receive little (or no) funding.
If Hutchins is so bothered about players playing abroad he should organise a trip to the Copa Petrobras that's played for five weeks during the end of the season. Maybe he should fund Mackin, Jamie Baker, Mors Phillips and James Ward for it.

I read it as :- Those of the 8 players chosen by the LTA but rejected by AELTC for the main draw will get WC into the (Wimbledon) 128 qualifying draw.
