Wimby Mens WCs

Thread started in the ladies section so i thought i get one going here too

I will assume they will give 5 away:

1) Boggo - might not need it, but would need some great results to be in that position, really needs to win a match here, the psychology for him on court must be hard, lets hope he gets a decent draw.
2) Bloomers - progress has been impressive, has the game to win on grass.
3) Baker - again impressive this year, dont know if he suits grass but deserves the wc.
4) Goodall - some progress, think he deserves one.
5) Greg - well he should get one 

so mackin misses out, he doesnt seem to have done much after his impressive ao qualies. he was talking bout top 100, but he around 275 now, maybe retirement is back on the cards, sheddy you know any more?
Marray misses out too, maybe unfairly but his injury will keep him out for quite a while so he slipped to the back of my mind, but he would be next in line. Both players are capable of coming through the qualies.

I request everyone to pray daily that Philippoussis recovers very soon or doesn't recover before late July. Or else he'll get one.


My wild cards would go to:


Main draw:

1) Alex Bogdanovic.
2) Greg Rusedski.
3) Richard Bloomfield.
4) Alan Mackin.
5) Josh Goodall.
6) Jonathan Marray.
7) Jamie Baker.
8) Play off winner.


Qualies draw:

1) Thiemo De Bakker will have to get one.
2) James Auckland.
3) Lee Childs.

Boggo will obviously get one and Baker deserves one for his performances this year. Bloomers hasn't set the tour alight, but his ranking should be enough to get him a WC. Goodall needs to pick up his game imo before he gets one. I'd also keep one for whichever of the british juniors is looking hottest at the time.

Grand Slam Champion

Boggo will get one if he needs it as he still the British number 3, and has some good results on grass so is capable of winning matches. Bloomfield and Baker have made some good progress this year, and so are shoe-ins to get one. Goodall has shown he can qualify for a grand slam, and so will probably get one, while Marray has the potential to threaten a lot of players on grass with his serve and volley game

Greg will get one so he can bow out at Wimbledon, so that leaves 2 spaces.

One will go to a random foreigner as always, while the other will go to the play off winner (if not one of the people already mentioned, then either Mackin or one of the top juniors)

For qualifying, probably Auckland, Slabinsky, Ward, Phillips, Bamford, Flanagan, Sagoo (if his results are good), and some of the juniors who have a good season

Is everyone forgetting Roger Drapers 'Get Tough' policy announced last year?
Remember how angry he was last year that the AELT gave wildcards to more British players than the few that the LTA recommended, when he said - "only those with a good chance of winning should receive one.

Quote from Sporting Life :-

Draper, heading into his first Wimbledon with the LTA, said: "It is disappointing to see some of the further wild cards that have been handed to British players today.

"The LTA advised the All England Club to limit the number handed out. We feel additional lucky loser wild cards do no help in creating a winning culture in British tennis.

"Good luck to all British players at Wimbledon - but in future years the LTA will work closely with the All England Club to establish a water-tight system that rewards winners and potential future winners."



However, I still feel that it is better to give British players the £10k for 'losing round 1' rather than foreign players - "charity begins at home" - at least it gives them some finance to travel abroad to 8-10 events or so and gain experience (and points, hopefully) that is hard to get at home. Just imagine how difficult it is to get started, with NO income and having to fly off every other week, most probably a problem that Draper has never encountered.

I think Greg will retire before Wimbledon The Davis Cup tie will be his last. I hope im proven wrong, but the way hes playing and sliding down the rankings i dont think he prepared to go into ATP qualies.

I doubt that Vik, I think that if he wants to retire in the next few months, he'll do so during the grass court season and have his swansong in front of home supporters. It would be perfect from him to end his career at Wimbledon. I can't see him playing any clay tournaments but would be very surprised if he didn't play Surbiton, Queens, Nottingham and Wimbledon and he'd surely get wildcards into all of those.

Recently the rules for WCs for Wimbledon have been:

* Ranking of 150 or under gets a WC
* Mens ranking of 300 or under gets a WC as long as they have not been given 3 or more WC for Wimbledon in the past. (Women have a cut off for this of 275)
* Winner of play off gets a WC
* Usually the best junior not included above gets a WC too

On current rankings, the WCs would go to:
Bogdanovic
Goodall
Marray
Rusedski
Baker

The play off top seeds would be
Bloomfield
Mackin
(Lee)
Auckland
Childs

Not sure about the top junior.
