Indian Wells pick 'em - who were our favourites

For R1, it's easy to work out who were our favoured picks for each match just by summing the 1s across the entry sheets. So, here are the results, with a * against the player who actually won if the match has already been played. Smileys are based on whether most of us got it right or wrong.

I've posted this on a separate thread because it's quite long and I don't want it to swamp the main thread!

(LL) Guillermo Canas ARG 14

Nicolas Massu CHI 13

(WC) Michael Russell USA 7
Marc Gicquel FRA 12

Sebastien Grosjean FRA 14
Jose Acasuso ARG 5

Florian Mayer GER 12
Igor Kunitsyn RUS 7

(Q) Andreas Seppi ITA 13
(WC) Alex Kuznetsov USA 6

(Q) Viktor Troicki SRB 3
Arnaud Clement FRA 16

This analysis is harder to do for later rounds because although it's just as easy to work out whether people thought the first or second-named player in the draw was going to win the match by summing the 1s, that can't tell you how many people had the right players in those positions in the first place.

However, it will still be easy to work out how many people thought each seed would win or lose in R2, regardless of which of their possible opponents people thought they would be playing against, so I'll post that data later too.

Edit: Day two results added, our 'favourites' won 21 matches, the same as andyjmr, who ended R1 in 5th.

Can I get a bonus for being the only one to predict Gabashvili into R2???????

You'll have to ask Bethan, but I'm guessing only if you offer to spend a month in ultimate's shed if he gets past Hrbaty in R2 too as well!

Just noticed (counting the smiles) that as a 'team' we got 16/24 right, which is only one less than the leaders.

Such a pity you didn't make that offer!

The same for R2 - this time, the number on the right is the number of us (out of 19) who thought the seed would win in R2, whoever we thought they would be playing against:

= we all got it right
= most of us got it right
= most of us got it wrong
= all but 1 or 2 of us got it wrong
= we all got it wrong

(1) Roger Federer 19 - lost
(25) Radek Stepanek 12 - lost
(19) Lleyton Hewitt 18 - lost
(14) David Ferrer 17 - won

(12) Novak Djokovic 19 - won
(20) Dmitry Tursunov 11 - lost
(27) Jurgen Melzer 8 - lost
(6) James Blake 17 - won

(4) Nikolay Davydenko 17 - won
(28) Agustin Calleri 3 - lost (except that the other 16 all picked Tigger not Hernych to be his opponent and win! )
(23) Marat Safin 18 - lost
(13) Andy Murray 19 - won

(9) Tommy Haas 19 - won
(24) Dominik Hrbaty 10 - lost
(26) Robin Soderling 18 - won
(5) Fernando Gonzalez 19 - won (but it was close!)

(8) Ivan Ljubicic 14 - won
(31) Nicolas Almagro 3 - lost (16 of us went for the 'upset' and got it right!)
(21) Mardy Fish 16 - lost
(10) David Nalbandian 14 - won

(15) Richard Gasquet 12 - won
(18) Jarkko Nieminen 18 - won
(33) Olivier Rochus 16 - won
(3) Andy Roddick 19 - won

(7) Tommy Robredo 17 - lost (bagelled in the final set!)
(30) Juan Ignacio Chela 12 - won
(17) Marcos Baghdatis 19 - lost
(11) Tomas Berdych 17 - lost

(16) Mikhail Youzhny 18 - lost
(22) Juan Carlos Ferrero 17 - won
(32) Fernando Verdasco 19 - won
(2) Rafael Nadal 18 - won

In R2, we all got 6 results right and all got 2 results wrong (Fed & Baggy)

Overall in R2, the majority vote on whether the seed would get through was correct 21 times and wrong 11 times, but in at least one case (Hernych beating Calleri) none of us got any points because we all voted either for a Calleri win or for Calleri to lose but to Tigger, not Hernych.

Just to show how many big shocks there were, in 7 of the 11 matches we collectively got wrong, less than 3 of us predicted the right result!
