On Sanduska and looking ahead to her quarter-final against Jane O'Donoghue: "I'm more surprised at her win over Scarfi than the win over Hawkins. I've only seen Sanduska one, she dropped a set against Jessica Ren in that match so going by that I wouldn't have thought she'd be a contender in this tournament but she's had some excellent wins so far. She hits pretty hard from the back of the court and has a good backhand. You can't discount her chances but I would be very surprised if she beat Jane."
On Fitzpatrick v Veselonvic in the quarters: "When there's a match between two players who train at the same academy it's always tough to call as they will have practised together a lot and know each other's game inside out. One of them might have a slight edge due to knowing how to exploit the other's weaknesses a bit better. It's going to be very close, both of these players could go on and win this tournament. It will probably come down to who plays best on the day and a few key points."
On Jade Windley's rd2 loss to Cattaneo: "That result surprises me a little. I've seen Cattaneo play several times before, she's someone who comes to the net quite a lot and does a bit of everything well. I thought it would have been a lot closer than that, maybe Jade played the rankings a little. It sounds strange to say this when she's just lost 3 and 2 but I think this is the sort of match which she'll win in 6 months time, she's got the game to beat players like Cattaneo. With young players, finding their best form day-in, day-out is hard and it's tough to win back-to-back matches at this level."
On Emily Webley-Smith's loss to Vedy: "Emily led 3-0 in the 1st set and 4-1 in the 2nd but ended up losing 6-3, 7-5. She told me that she played well but she's a bit gutted not to have taken those chances. She put herself in a good position today. It was always going to be tough, Vedy's top 300 and plays consistently at that level, she's not an easy player to maintain your rhythm against but given that she had those leads, it's a bit of a missed opportunity for Emily."
On Corinna Dentoni beating Nikki Prosser and her chances in this tourney: "Dentoni's a class act. She's a very fit player and really consistent. She'll be tough to beat here and is definately one of the contenders for the title."
After her rd1 win, Anna F said "I was very pleased to get the win after having some first round losses recently. At the start of the third set, my game plan was very clear, I knew what I had to do and I think this helped me to stay positive mentally.”
It's going to be really fascinating match between Fitzpatrick and Veselonvic. Both train together at Monte Carlo. The Serb is a year older, a leftie and is ranked over 200 places higher at 450. They played in Sunderland in Jan, Veselonvic won 6-4, 6-4 in rd2 but Anna had chances.
It just shows how good a prospect Jade Windley is, that Luke expected her to beat a player ranked in the 500s. I guess that at just 17, it's difficult to find consistency day in, day out and she had something of an off day yesterday.
Yes anna's opponent was injured, calling for the trainer twice in the second set. But that does still not take anything away from Anna's performance today which in my opinion was stunning. She served excellent also her groundstrokes were very solid . Only problem on serve was at 3-1 in the second where she was 15-40 down but she fought back and from then on played a fantastic game. She has also got a very nice body..... sorry abit off topic. I spoke to Anna after the match to congratulate her on her performance which she seemed very pleased with. She said after the final tomorrow she is heading of to Greece to play a 10K next week.
With Regards to Janes performance, very irratic. Her opponent was simply there for the taking but she would do one good shot followed by a unforced error. Jane was always shouting and moaning to herself which i found quite funny what she was saying.
Best of Luck tomorrow Anna. Without question if she follows todays performance up with another one of the same quality she can win.
What a great couple of wins for Anna Fitzpatrick, Veselinovic and now Vedy !
Going back to the quarter-final win over Veselinovic: MCTA head coach David Sammel said “I was pleased with Anna’s resolve in the first set and the way she changed the trend of match by stepping up the court rather than being controlled. For Ana (Veselinovic), it was going fine until midway through the second set. She created the myth in her head that her forehand wasn’t going well and subsequently lost her competitiveness. As a result, the third set was quite one-sided.”
Thanks for the match info Jack You going tomorrow for the final ? Agree about the Fitzy bod...she made the top 10 in the prestigious Sutton 25K "cutie of the day" competition, some achievement given the quality on display that day !
Anna's serve is a big weapon, I watched her twice in Sutton and in both matches it struck me how effective that serve is - she gets a lot of free points and as she fills out her frame more, it will only improve. Vedy's a tricky opponent as she moves so well and gets a lot of balls back, she also has a very good forehand so if you don't continually remain aggressive against her, she will punish you....Anna must have played exceptionally well for the whole match to beat her 0 and 1, that has to be a career best win !
Was she going for her shots a lot today ? She must have hit a lot of winners to beat Vedy that comprehensively. Vedy's the type of player who you really have to hit off the court, to beat. To me it seemed like Anna's big weapon is the backhand, forehand is also very effective when things are going well but it's the side which can break down at times...that's Anna's only real big weakness imo, what would you say ?
It's a real shame about Jane given that she's beaten Widmer twice before That's the problem for Jane, she really goes for her shots and takes quite a lot of risks and when she's playing well, she can be devastating, simply batters opponents into submission. However, when the timing's off, she just makes too many ues and there doesn't seem to be any plan B where she tries to construct things a little slower and go for a bit less....her rd2 losses at Wimbledon in 2004 and 2005 stick in my mind as prime examples of that.
However, still good to see her on the comeback trail...been a great two weeks for her !
Anna's guaranteed to move up to a new career high of 588, if she wins today she'll be just outside the top 550. It'll be the first time she's broken the top 600.
