It's pretty unlikely that she'll be dropping sets in 10K qualies, given that she is a brilliant player on fast surfaces.
That's true, Naomi's been dominating the British tour lately and so probably feels v confident in her ability to qualify for these events, especially after her results last autumn. With a good draw she can definately cause some shocks upsets here.
Maybe Jade wasn't so confident about qualifying and so thought she might aswell take the wildcard here as she's unlikely to get one for the Bath 10Ks. Hopefully Jocelyn Rae, Amanda Elliott and Caitlin Steel get wcs for those tourneys.
Wow, great start for the Brits...7/8 through ain't bad !
Good win for Jane, I spoke to Luke Milligan last night (see the article on britishtennis.net) and he said that it wouldn't be straightforward as Wellauer is a tricky opponent and the first match after winning a tournament is always the hardest as it's difficult to re-focus.
I've no idea how that Schaeffer girl is ranked in the 800s, she hasn't won since 2005. Gift of a draw for Elizabeth.
I wonder how Doernemann's injury affected that match. Luke said "This'll be an interesting mix-up of styles, Doernemann is very solid and hard-hitting from the back while Anna looks to attack the net a lot and serve-volley. Anna has options other players don't have with her net game and ability to mix up the play. A lot will depend on whether she can put it all together and cope with Doernemann's power from the baseline."
Anna's style is very unorthodox in the women's game, very few players come to the net and mix it up quite as much as she does. Players like Doernemann won't have faced many opponents like that before. When Anna gets it together it's very difficult for opponents to find their rhythm, I watched her against Webley-Smith in Sutton and for periods Anna was completely outplaying Emily, however, she wouldn't be able to do that for more than 2-3 games...would end up making some sloppy errors.
Veselinovic was always going to be tough for Julia Bone, she's the new Monte Carlo recruit I think.
I asked Luke for some info on her game style, he said "Jade is a very good competitor, she's a player who would have a chance against anyone in this field as we saw when she beat Karen Paterson in January after Karen had won a 10K the week before. Jade's an aggressive baseliner, she wouldn't be classed as an enormously big hitter but she's hits a very heavy ball. She's also a good mover and very tactically astute; comes into the net but not any more than most female players do."
Good to see Emily getting revenge, she lost 3 and 2 to Benamar in Jersey last week. Luke said he was very surprised at that loss but since then, they'd discussed several tactics and several things which she didn't do in the Jersey match to exploit weaknesses in Benamar's game..."Benamar takes very big swings at the ball, plays very elaborate strokes. There's also the question of how reliable her backhand is and I didn't feel that Emily tested that enough last week."
Good day for the Brits and will be interesting to hear what Luke Milligan has to say. Ultimateshedman, when you speak to Luke could you ask him what's happened to Claire Peterzan - he used to coach her last year.
Remaining rd1 matches involving Brits and Luke Milligan's previews:
Anna Fitzpatrick (7) v Natalie Fehse (Ger): "Fehse is an awkward opponent to face, she's one of those players who are better than they look in a competitive situation, she moves well, is good tactically and makes you hit a lot of balls. She puts her game out there and aim to make it difficult to beat her, it could be difficult for Anna as she's a bit low in confidence with not many wins this year. However, Anna's a player with a lot of class, I'd back her to win this one."
Deborah Armstrong (q) v Corinna Dentoni (Ita)(8): "It's a toughie for Deborah. Dentoni is a good athlete, moves well, very solid off both sides and has no obvious weaknesses. Deborah's a player you look at and feel that she could put a bit more on the ball. I wouldn't sya it's a case of bulking up more but she needs to think a bit more tactically in the rallies and look to change up the pace more."
Olivia Scarfi v Patrycia Sanduska (Pol)(q): "Scarfi should win if she plays like she has been doing. She gets very pumped up and aggressive on court, she's about 5ft 11 and is very athletic and strong. She hits hard off both sides, looking to wear her opponent down from the back of the court. She doesn't come forward much at all and when she does it's to hit drive-volleys."
Lucy Warburton v Laura Haberkorns (Ger)
Hopefully Fitzy and Olivia will win. Lucy may have a slight chance but Deborah will have to really up her game to progress.
