There's a 25K on Clay the week after Hammond. And it would be a nice warm up for Fed Cup (although I think Nigel will probably pick from the girls playing in Spain).
I'll try and find out whether she has a wc into Miami....
What are the dates of the Spring championships ?
There's that Italy 25K after Hammond which jamatthews mentions, and also the week after there's 25Ks on clay in France and Italy.
I doubt Naomi will get a Fed Cup spot...it looking like it'll be between Anne, Mel, Katie, Sarah and Bally for the 3 singles spots (Claire Curran will surely get the doubles place). Mel may be out of the running unless she has some good results in the next 3 weeks, her form so far this year has been poor (though she was ill for 2 tournaments in Jan-Feb).
Are there hitting partner/reserve places as in the DC ? If so Naomi would probably get offered one of those, maybe either George or Natasha too.
Play was interrupted yesterday because of the forest fires ! Ash was falling down on the court meaning and the air quality wasn't good enough for players to play for quite a while
Brilliant final qualies round win for Naomi, absolutely hammered America's Kim-Anh Nguyen 6-1, 6-0
Shame that the field here is so ridiculously strong
Rd1: N Cavaday (GB)(q) v V Tetreault (Can)(q)
It's a winnable first round match. Tetreault's ranked 85 places higher at 258 and didn't drop a set in her three qualifying matches. Last month she gave British no 4 Sarah Borwell a close match in the Saguenay 50K, losing in 3 sets in rd1. Last year she had a lot of success on the North American challenger circuit, reaching 2 finals and 2 semis at 25K level and then making two quarters in 50Ks.
Rd1: N Cavaday (GB)(q) bt V Tetreault (Can)(q)(wr: 256) 6-1, 6-2
Naomi's just on fire in this tournament ! I'm simply stunned at this result, she's absolutely thrashed a girl ranked 100 places higher ! On this form, she has to be in the Fed Cup team.
Next up is American 3rd seed Abigail Spears. She's ranked 121 and has been as high as 66 (June 2005). In rd1 she beat Canadian world no 140 Stephanie Dubois in straights. So far in 2007, Spears has made a 75K quarter-final and qualified for WTA Memphis and reached rd2. In the Aussie Open, she lost in the final qualifying round.
Spears competes mainly in WTAs and 75Ks and 50Ks, all a level up from the kind of tournaments Naomi usually plays. It'll be extremely tough for Naomi but on this form, who knows. In the grass season last summer, she beat a player with a similar ranking to Spears in Birmingham.
