RE: Pick 'em Contest Indian Wells

And I was horrified to see my flag as English instead of Scottish - so much for not offending anyone

You must have viewed the table mid-upload - there are a few seconds during an upload where the flags may not be correct if people have moved around in the table since it was last published. I won't bore you with the explanation, but it's to do with the way Excel publishes pictures in spreadsheets. It should be fine now.

Bethan - it may be that your browser isn't set to check for a new version each time it goes to a page and is viewing the cached version. Clicking refresh or, if that fails, holding shift and clicking refresh, should do it.

Before I hunt for it, do you have a legitimate link ot Tanzania?

Edit: Before you read this, I'll explain. If we say everyone has to have been born in (or now live in) a country to be able to claim its flag, it'll be quite an event when we get someone from a completely new country ... but if people just choose flags at random, it loses its meaning. (that's my take on it, anyway)

Thanks for organising and running this comp Steven and Bethan. i'm loving it.

Put me down for a Scottish flag. although i'm half English, it was Andy Murray that got me interested in tennis and was the reason i found this excellent site in the first place.

hmm - Guy's flag definitely looks like St George, rather than St Andrew to me.

Guy's flag is Scottish on my computer (unless Steven has craftily changed it in the last 5mins.

And I now have the update as soon as I click the link so goodness knows what was happening last time, thanks for the tip though Steven.

And no worries andyjmr, I really enjoy doing this type of competition and am more than happy to run it given I have the time.

Oops, my edit of my original reply and your post crossed. That was quite a coincidence.

My edit was:

What do people think though?

1) got to live there or have the passport (for the reason given above)
2) any link will do (e.g. Johnny's 'lived in Tanzania for a few years when I was a kid')
3) no link needed, people can claim any flag they like

I'll have the flag for the British Antartica regions...I've often dreamt of setting up a few well-insulated sheds there in the past and have often viewed them on the web and on TV.

To answer the last posts ...

Thanks Drew and andyjmr, it's fun.

Not sure why people are seeing the wrong flags, though I know how it can happen.

** start of even more boring than usual bit **

The way Excel publishes to the web, if you publish it to results.htm, say, and there are 3 players (1 from England in 1st, 1 from Scotland in 2nd, 1 from Wales in 3rd, say), it will create results.htm and also a directory called results_blah which holds all the flag images, called img1 (FD with the England flag in this case), img 2 (Guy with the Scottish flag), img 3 (the Indian flag)

If the Scot takes over the lead before you republish, then when you do republish, it will output a new img 1 (now the Scottish flag) and a new img 2 (now the English flag)

Hence, if someone's browser then looks for an update of the html page but takes the images from its cache, it'll show the wrong flags for the first two players.

** end of even more boring than usual bit **

However, I've done much more extensive results sheets with flag on another site for a few years and in the early days, a handful of people did report this problem, but it went away, either with a IE upgrade (but that would have been from IE 4 to IE 5!) or when I upgraded my version of Excel, I'm not sure which. So, if it's not happening on the other site now, it shouldn't be happening to you either.

Hmmm ...

I think option 2 is fair enough.

Means we can be a little bit more creative but it can be regualted fairly easily.
(As long as we're honest!)

OK, let's go for option 2 than. And yes, I'm assuming everyone's honest here.

Sheddie, you'll have to choose again, sorry!

I'll change the entry sheet to ask for country before Miami.

TAN flag is quite nice, actually.
