WTA Doha - tier III

British no 5 Amanda Keen has entered qualifying for WTA Doha (Tier III) this weekend. The tall left-hander has only won 2 matches so far this year and she'll be hoping for a turnaround in form in the Middle East.

Amanda has drawn 20 year old Ukranian Mariya Koryttseva in rd1. Koryttseva is currently ranked 452 but reached a career high of 119 this time last year before being forced out for 7 months with an injury. She's also been as high as 56 in doubles. So far in 2007, she's won a match in a 75K and played in WTA Bangalore, losing in rd1

It's a Tier II and she won her 1st round match and now faces Bondarenko K in the 2nd round.

Amanda

She'll have to go something to beat Bondarenko though?

Any points for qualies wins on WTA tour?

No Paszek.

I was looking forward to seeing her after I saw her play Henin. They show a lot of WTA on TV out here.

Katerina Bondarenko is the top seed and is currently ranked over 100 places higher than Amanda at 111. She has been in the top 100.

Bondarenko is also a quality doubles player with a current ranking of 61. She was in sublime form in rd1 in Doha, hammering Ireland's Kelly Liggan 6-1, 6-1. She has played just 3 tournaments so far in 2007, losing in rd1 of Aussie Open qualifying and WTA Pattaya and in qualifying for Dubai last week.

Keen v Bondarenko is on court at midday today. The scoreboard should hopefully be working.

Thanks for that, Jamatthews!

I think that Naomi will qualify for a few this year. She came really close in Birmingham last year and has surely improved a lot from there.

I'd love to see her head to Asia right after the US Open. The fields are weak and more importantly, I would go and see her play.

Getting WCs may harm Naomi's chances of qualifying (at least on the grass anyway).

The close calls (final qualifying round):

Stockholm 2004 Wartusch def O'Donoghue 6-4 7-5
Birmingham 2006 Czink def Cavaday 3-6 7-5 7-5
Wimbledon 1997 Schnitzer def Keen 7-6(1) 2-6 7-5
Birmingham 2005 Fujiwara def Borwell 6-2 6-4
Eastbourne 2004 Black def Baltacha 6-2 7-6(5)
Dubai 2006 Bondarenko def Baltacha 7-6(4) 7-6(4)
Doha 2006 Uberoi def Baltacha 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3
Hobart 2006 Kremer def Keothavong 6-4 6-1
US Open 2003 Drake def Keothavong 7-5 6-1
