Richard's up against Slovakia's Ivo Klec. Klec is currently ranked 218 (career best of 184 reached last August). In 2006 his best results came on the hard courts of Brazil where he made the quarters and the final of two challengers. So far in 2007, he's reached round 2 of 3 challengers on 3 different continents. His last outing was in Wroclaw at the start of this month where he lost a marathon to Alex Bogdanovic 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. Like Bloomfield, Klec is a big server and both like to attack the net so it's likely to be a match in which breaks are few and far between. They've played twice before, both times in the Middle East in 2004. Richard won 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 in Qatar and 6-0, 3-1 ret in Bahrain.
Josh plays Swedish qualifier Bjorn Rehnqvist who was in impressive form in qualifying, knocking out the top seed in 3 sets. The 28 year old Swede is ranked 470 (career best of 147 in 2002). He's qualified for 4 challengers this year but has only won 1 main draw match, against Dominic Meffert in Durban. Josh hasn't won a match since December and will be looking to end his losing streak here.
Doh! Shame for Josh .. it would be interesting to know his thoughts on his season so far, i wonder if anyone could get their hands (ears) on an interview with him.
Well done Richard though - I hope he goes deep here, in fact I hope he wins it.
I hope Josh is not going to be this year's Matt Smith (i.e. doing extremely well one year, overplays through into December and then bombs the year after), but the signs so far are not too good. It's early days though
