Shame! Bloomers took it much much closer than he had any right to given the rankings though. So well done to him, hope he takes confidence from this match and gets those two extra points next time he plays someone ranked quite a bit higher than him.

Very sad that he didn't manage to snatch the win after all that effort but given how badly Boggo, Arvs and Aucks did against Peya and the start to 2007 that Peya has had (in the top 50 of therace the last time I looked), the closeness of this match confirms that Bloomers has gone up to another level in the last few months.
Just wish he could have won, it would have been brilliant. So close!

A case of so close and yet so far. Still a great performance from Richard against an on-form player, taking him so close...Several key points in the match.....2nd game of the 2nd set, Richard had just taken the first set with a brilliant tiebreak but let his concentration slip and played a dreadful game to get broken to 15. Similar to the match he had against Ulihrach in Wroclaw a couple of weeks ago. Also, early in the 3rd set, he had 3 bps but didn't take any of them.
This was the first time I've seen Bloomers play for a couple of years. These are my impressions on his game: The serve is a major weapon and it's quite easily top 50 standard perhaps higher. He gets a huge number of service winners and cheap points off it, if Murray had that serve then he'd be top 5 already.
He serve-volleys all the time on his first serve and sometimes on the 2nd. He's a good volleyer, that aspect of his game of his game has improved a lot. However, sometimes he plays too safe on the first volley and pushes it into court, rather than being really aggressive and punching it away. He can get away with that at futures level but against players like Peya he will gets punished for that most of the time.
At the moment, on fast indoor surfaces and grass, Richard is a serious threat to any player ranked outside the top 75 when he's playing well. However, in order to break the top 100 he really needs to improve his baseline game and returns. His returns have improved since I last saw him but he still misses too many makeable ones...most of them float long...especially on the backhand as he tends to push uppishly at them. With his baseline game, as Nathi said in Wroclaw, he's making far too many unforced errors. He's definately being a lot more aggressive from the baseline now (as before he was just v consistent) but is making too many errors. This means that whenever he misses the first serve, he's generally in trouble and also his opponents get a large number of cheap points on their service games. When he strings it together, like in the first set tiebreak, he's unstoppable but most of the time he's hitting long. I'm not sure why that is, maybe he's hitting too flat.
If he becomes more consistently aggressive from the baseline then he will win close matches like these, and to break the top 100 he needs to do that.
This Peya geezer is becoming a bit of a pain in the neck....hopefully Andy or Tim get drawn against him in the next few weeks so they can duff him up 2 and 2 or something
From what looked like being good year for Brits, not looking that way so far
I think it's been quite a good start to the year.....Jamie Baker looks like he's going to be top 150 very soon, he's had some great runs and in US challengers aswell !
Apart from Andy and Arvind Parmar, Brits have tended to really struggle on the US hard court circuit.
Andy's won a title, made an ATP final and rd4 of the AO in his first 3 outing. Jamie Murray and Aucks have reached two ATP finals between them and are both closing in on the top 50 !
Bloomers made the Wrexham final, has had a couple of tight losses since which could have gone either way.
Mackin qualified for the AO, hasn't won a match since but I think that returning to the European indoor circuit will lead to some better results
Jonny Marray had a really good start in Melbourne, he'll be back next week in Cherbourg, hopefully he can continue his form from last autumn.
On the womens side, several players have had some promising results.
Goodall and Boggo have been disappointing so far and no one from below the top 300 has really done anything. The player most likely to is Kasiri but I think he's got injured again, not sure what it is.
