i rekon if she gets top 100 it will bring others into the top from britain.. stoop poss maybe ball/anne windley in few years few other prospects smith and khan and rest
I agree, with so many Brits in the 150-350 ranking-range, hopefully it will have a knock-on effect.
Where do ppl think Jane will end up ? Back in the top 200...maybe higher ? or will the wins dry up at challenger level and she'll finish 2007 ranked 300ish. Does she have the potential to be top 100
ultimateshedman wrote:There are a lot of very talented British players coming through atm who have the potential to be top 100. Naomi Cavaday is the big hope and I think she could be top 50...it's very hard to say whether a player's going to make it to the very top of the game and be challenging for major titles. When Murray made his breakthrough in 2005, most people thought top 50, don't think many would have thought he'd be top 10 within 2 years.
The situations are really different. Andy was the best 1987 player in the world at that time and by looking at some of his results you could guess that he would end up in the top 25 even if (if...) he fulfilled 50% of his potential. I mean, you need to be more talented than Federer to win two rounds in a Challenger at the age of 16 and 2 and then not end up getting ranked higher than 50.
There are at least ten players born in 1990/1991 who can defeat Naomi easily at this moment (never mind two years from now). Most of the top players in her age group can beat people in the top 50 on their day. Naomi is some distance away from there at the moment. She'll need to improve quite a lot from where she is to make inroads into the top 60 or 70. Let's hope that that'll happen.

After Naomi...there's Georgie Stoop, Anna Smith, Natasha Khan, Anna Fitzpatrick...all of whom will surely be top 200, top 250...hard to say at this point exactly how far they can go, until you see how their games match up against top 150 and top 100 opposition. Hopefully we'll get to see that with Georgie this summer. I think Anna F is the LTA's biggest hope out of those 4, everyone I've spoken to rates her v highly.
After those players we've got lots of talented juniors aged 15-16: Jocelyn Rae, Jade Windley, Laura Slater, Yasmin Clarke, Naomi Broady, Steph Cornish etc
Loads of players in the 15-19 age bracket who can crack the top 100, but we are quite some distance away from getting a star like Andy. We have very little chance of succeeding at international level as we don't work on our fitness as much as other countries (just my opinion, by the way. I don't have facts to back it up) and our girls aren't prepared to test themselves against quality opposition from a young age. It's near impossible to get to the top unless you are beating top 150 players by the time you are 16. Our girls play British Tour and GPs when they are 14, 15 or even 16 and then make their Junior debut. If someone wants to crack the top ten after starting to play internationally on a regular basis at 16, they can dream on. While there may be a few exceptions, it deviates from the norm by quite some distance and you have something like 1 in a 100 chance of achieving your goal.
Andy was testing himself against the best from the time he was 14 or 15. He was playing Juniors full time and men's qualies regularly from 15. You don't become a star all of a sudden - you need to take some steps from a very young age. The only British girls from the recent past who have taken those steps are Jade Curtis and Tara Moore. Jade's plans have backfired a bit in the last twelve months but I think that she can return back strong from here. Let's see what happens to Tara...
The British Tour isn't for budding stars - it's for people who are struggling hard to make a living out of tennis. There isn't enough talent there to test yourself and it's no secret that competition makes people perform better. Why people like Windley were playing domestic tennis even past their 16th birthday is hard to understand. If she was playing Juniors, she would be in the top 50 by now and would play regularly against people who are Slam material.
Maybe one of Tara Moore, the Rens or Laura Robson could become a star. Don't see any from this generation. Loads of people top 100 players in the making, but unless they keep on improving into their twenties, I'm afraid that 100 is the limit for most of them.
Mind it, I am just using Windley as an example. There are exceptions to this and let's hope that she's one of those special cases. And this is true for the boys, too.
i state now that naomi cavaday will be top 100 by end of year. she is already 285 and last year she didnt play a comp between end june and september. if she does well in this gap her ranking will soar
A bold prediction tennisbrain, which is always good to see.
I continue to be impressed by Naomi's progress and I do see what you are saying.
But I'd say top 100 will be next year. I don't see her getting the necessary points this year ( aproximately 300 ) although I'd love to be proved wrong.
Me thinks top 150 this year and top 100 next year.
Where do people think Baltacha can climb to in the rankings... she is still only aged 23( though due to injuried hasnt suffered to wear and tear of years on the circuit)and has always had the potential to be top 100 and having reached the 3rd round of both Wimbledon and Australian Open so she obviously has the talent!
Unfortunately injuries have plagued her career aswell as her liver problems and bouts of tonsiltiis ... but will this be totally detrimental to her career or can she overcome all this and reach her potential?
Personally i believe she can get top 200 by this year and barring any further illness or injuries i think she can reach top100!
Meh, to be honest I expect more of the same. Players dotting around the 150-300 mark with the occasional big week but mostly struggling. Hopefully Baltacha will get herself back in the top 200 ready for a big push next year, and Naomi will join her there.
I think Cavaday for top 100. If Cavaday can do it it will have a knock on effect & - Katie, Elena & Anne will do it - I do not see Mel or Georgie doing it but I see them well within 200!! Amanda, Joss, Jade C & W will break 500 but must step up to improve further. My outside bet is Jenny Rabot, on her day she can beat any one of the named above!!!
