I know he is not an immediate threat, but Hewitt, lurking about 5 places below Andy, is out of Marseille. He lost the first set to Simon 1-6 then retired at 2-3 in the second set.

wow - looks like there's something pretty nasty going around in Marseille..... on court now: Gasquet gets broken in his first game against Marc Gicquel...2-0*
hmm - I think he can still overtake if Gasquet goes out in the QF, and Andy "only" gets as far as the final. I put him on 1590 now, and Andy would have 1650 - 175 + 120 =1595...Bethan, looks like my numbers and yours aren't matching. - time for another "what if"?
If it is any help, my figures agree with Rob's. Gasquet meets Soderling in the QF and Sod seems to be playing very well at the moment, having defeated Davydenko and Johansson.

Yeah, my numbers agree with you....I'm pretty sure I forgot to take off Gasquet's 18th when working out how much of a threat he is
Here is the updated what if?:
If Andy wins in San Jose: he will end with 1650 points, same as he started with. He would re-overtake Gasquet(out before final), Ferrer(out already), Djokovic(out already). And could be overtaken by no one. Best case: 13 Worst case:14
If Andy loses the final in San Jose: he will end with 1595 points. He would overtake Gasquet(out by semis ). He could be overtaken by no one. Best case: 15 Worst csae: 16
If Andy loses the semi in San Jose: he will end with 1530 points. He would overtake no one. He could be overtaken by no one. Best case: 16 Worst case: 16
If Andy loses the quarter in San Jose: he will end with 1515 points. He would overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Baghdatis(win Marseille). Best case: 16 Worst case: 17
There, sorry about any confusion caused. Unfortunately the only real change (apart from correcting my mistake) occurs if Andy wins the tournament, where his new worst case is a ranking of 14. So basically Andy, my friend. You have to win. simple as that!

Still no- one advances, as 18th/19th scores are waay too high at this altitude. Ferrer joins Ancic, Stepanek and Djokovic on the sidelines .
Today in Marseilles, Gasquet plays an on- form Soderling, and if he wins, Andy will need to win the tournament to overtake him. Baghdatis plays also on- form Youzhny. Nieminen plays Benneteau.
