RE: British Tour Event: Corby Week 7

Its a pity that as British Tour Events go, this seems to be a slightly weaker one.

Still Broady is probably worth going to see anyway

Yeah, I just had a quick look at last year's Tour event in Corby. Georgie Stoop beat Natasha Khan in the final!

Gutted.

Or to look on the positive side you might be the first to see a player ranked in top 300 by the end of the year!

Couple of interesting late entries! Claire Rickets has entered, ranked 866 and is installed as new No. 1 seed, along with Rachel Hall who is ranked 1483. On the men's side, Matthew Illingworth has entered. Is he the guy with the big serve?

Looks like Naomi may have a fight on her hands for this title after all. Does anyone have any info on Rachel Hall?

I don't know much about Sian either.

She is a 14 year old Welsh girl from Wrexham who has been training at the academy in Bath for the past two years. She is ranked 27 in Europe in 14s at the moment, but has been much higher. She isn't as good as the Rens (or rather, not as impressive as the Rens), but she is a very decent prospect for British tennis. Worth checking out for sure!

Went for a couple of hours today. Was a girl called Carly Southwood playing. She used to be ranked at 660 in the world, but was beaten today by a young girl called Manisha Foster (I think that's who it was lol).

Watched one or two other games, saw Ben Pritchard in great form win his first round game.

Also popped in yesterday and saw a bit of the qualifiers. A girl called Hope Johnson won a qualifying game but when I went in today I saw she had lost in final qualies round. When I left though, i noticed she had got a lucky loser spot and won her first round match! Wasn't that impressed by her game, but she is a hell of a good looking girl. Think she's about 16 and just looks amazing out on the court.

Shedman, you're spot on about the girls at all of these events, even down to this level. Southwood was wearing what could barely be described as hotpants and she has a hell of a body. Anyone have any idea what happened to her after being ranked in the 600s? She retire and now making a comeback or just retire and play the odd British Event? She hits the ball very hard but far too many errors which makes sense if she hasn't played for a while. Girl she was playing is very small but hung in well with her and got her reward.

Hmm, LTA website says Homewood won 6-1 6-3. Must admit I only had half an eye on the game but I was sure Homewood lost. Maybe I'm going crazy. Hope so because them "shorts" were amazing lol

Went up for another couple of hours. Watched No. 1 seed John McGahon who is ranked in the 1200s. He got smashed up by Jagdev Sagoo 6-0 6-1. Sagdev last played in 2002, at junior level where he was ranked 187. Last record of him playing juniors is in october 2002, just after his 15th birthday. Apparently he had an incredibly bad run of injuries and is only now making his comeback at 19.

He was very impressive indeed and if he can keep up that form he will have no trouble getting ranking points. I've been told he will be entering futures very shortly so keep an eye out for him. McGahon is ranked in 1200s and was never in the match at any point. Sagoo is very powerful off both wings, very accurate groundstrokes, hits a lot of winners and has a decent serve. In my mind, his name is on this trophy already, although lack of match practise may show tomorrow when he has to play 2 matches in one day. Keep an eye out guys, he will rise up the rankings very shortly for sure if he can play like today. I commented afterwards to the guy he was with (his coach I assume, although he was a bit quiet so couldn't really speak to him) that he played very well only to be told, "it was okay, he's played a lot better". A child watching the game told Jagdev on the way off court that he'd "be a professional one day" LOL. Sagoo told him "there's a lot of hard work before that".

Watched Rachel Hall afterwards who is ranked in 1400s. She won a tough 3 setter. I believe there is a phrase for Rachel Hall:

You would crawl a million miles on broken glass just to kiss the exhaust of the van that took her dirty knickers to the launderette.

Few more things:

Apparently Carly Homewood gave the game up after failing to get beyond the 600s and is now making a full comeback. Checked her ITF profile and she's been playing Futures qualies for quite a while now without any success.

Also, I was told the reason why there is such a weak men's draw is because the Exmouth qualifiers sign in is on Friday night instead of Saturday, meaning they couldn't play the final if they made it. Anyone know why it's Friday this week, has severely weakened the men's draw.

The guy running the tournament who I spoke to also works the control desk at futures events. His next one is in Jersey in a few weeks, mens and womens. Reckon I should try and twist his arm to get the scores sent to us immediately as they come in or does somebody else already have a method of getting the results super quick?

Sagoo is into the final! When I turned up today he had already won his quarter and was on court for his semi, he was a set down but a break up at *3-2 in the second. As soon as I arrived, he proceeded to lose his serve twice and allow Harry Skinner to serve for the match at *5-3. However, Jag broke back and took the set on a tie breaker, before winning the 3rd 6-3. He was visibly tired today, his feet weren't moving like they were yesterday but at the end of tomorrow he will have played 5 matches in 4 days, which will surely do him the power of good. He has a very good temperament on court, very rarely showing any negative emotion. Skinner was very loud and agitated at times, especially when serving for the match, while Jag stayed calm and confident. He never really looked like he thought he was going to lose, even when facing match point in the 2nd set tie breaker.

Clare Rickets was already into the final when I arrived, winning both quarters and semis in easy straight sets, however to my utter devastation Racheal Hall went out in the quarters, meaning her opponent Guxhuli faced Naomi Broady in the semis. I stayed to watch this match despite the absence of the amazing Rachael. Broady won 7-6 7-6. She led 5-1 in the first set at one point.

Broady is very tall (pretty scary in fact. how does a 16 year old girl get that tall?). That obviously helps with the serve, which is pretty big. She hits the ball cleanly and very hard. Guxhuli played pretty well to stay with her, but Naomi's advantage of having the bigger serve ultimately told in both breakers. I don't think she played near her best today, she was getting fairly frustrated at times. Will be interesting to see what she can produce tomorrow when facing the higher ranked Ricketts.

I got a few photos of Sagoo and Broady on my phone and also videoed the last couple of points of Naomi's matches. Going to take me a while to work out how to show you them though, so bear with me lol. Will try to get some more tomorrow.

Hurray for Sagoo!

Yeah, Naomi is very tall and a big hitter. She is some sort of a weak Sharapova. I'm sure that David will soon post that there's another similarity between Sharapova and Naomi....

Looking forward to the pics and videos. I have seen Naomi play a bit, but that was of some time ago.
