RE: Sutton 25K

I notice Claire Curran is playing doubles with Anne K.

She is the girl who made the doubles top 100 last year then seemed to disappear of the face of the earth.

It was probably an injury seeing as she was doing so well.

Hopefully she is fully fit and will kick on from here back to the top of the game!

A couple more results:

Georgie Stoop bt Mel South 6-3, 6-1 !   Looks like Georgie completely outplayed Mel !

Unfortunately...

Nika Ozegovic bt Karen Paterson 6-3 3-6 6-3

Ozegovic is ranked 281 (about 160 places higher) so it was a tough one for Karen

The Russian girls who beat Anna Smith and Natasha Khan in the qualies both won their rd1 matches comfortably today.

Final two results are now in:

Katie O'Brien (6) bt Katarina Kachlikova (Svk) 6-1, 7-6(7)

M Ani (Est)(4) bt J Windley (GB) 4-6, 6-0, 6-1

Good win for Katie, hopefully she can have a good run here and play either Anne or Georgie in the semis

Jade did extremely well to win a set off a player who's ranked well in the world's top 200   Looks like she was somewhat outplayed in sets 2 and 3 but still...I think she's fully justified her wildcard. What a great run she's had in the last 3 weeks and she's only 16 !  Looking like a better prospect than the other 16 year old Jade (Curtis) at the moment.

Apparently Mel has been suffering with a virus since returning from Australia and that really hampered her against Georgie as she didn't have the energy to compete full out.

“I played a good match and I was particularly pleased with the way I stuck to my gameplan,” Stoop said.

“I didn’t let little things get in my way or annoy me and mentally I played a very solid match.

“Widmer is a useful lefty and is quite awkward to play, but if I stick to my gameplan tomorrow then I should have a good chance of progressing.”

In round 2, Amanda Keen has the unenviable task of taking on top seed Elise Tamaela. They've played twice before, Taemala winning both times; 6-4, 6-4 at the Edinburgh 10K in 2003 and 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at a 75K in Bordeaux in 2004. However, both those matches were on clay  so Amanda may have a better chance this time. Taemala has started the year well, only narrowly missing out on qualifying for the Aussie Open and beating Russia's Nina Bratichova in rd1 here.

Katie will play Croatia's Nika Ozegovic who defeated Karen Paterson in rd1 and Anne Keothavong faces Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic.

Sarah Borwell is the only Brit left in action this week. To complete a dire week for British tennis, Amanda, Katie, Anne and Georgie all crashed out in rd2   I was hoping that 3/4 would reach the quarters.

As steven would say.....it's now "Borwell or bust"

Elise Tamaela (Ned) bt Amanda Keen (Gbr) 6-2 6-1

Nika Ozegovic (Cro) bt Katie O’Brien (Gbr) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1

Andrea Hlavackova (Cze) bt Anne Keothavong (Gbr) 6-4 6-0

Gaelle Widmer (Sui) bt Georgie Stoop (Gbr) 3-6 6-4 7-5

Georgie was probably unlucky not to win that one, looks like it was a very close match. Widmer's certainly proved to be the scourge of the Brits this week

None of the other 3 results were even close though, Tamaela's ranked quite a bit higher than Amanda so that one was kind of expected but what happened to Katie and Anne. They're both ranked 50-100 places higher than their opponents.

This must be the most hopeless week British tennis has seen for a while.

In the most hopeless week, they would all have lost in R1....

But still, a long way from the finest day in British women's tennis....

Good to see Claire Curran winning again, I was worried she'd retired. She hadn't played for ages before this tournament. Was a shame as she had been playing WTAs on a regular basis
