Week 32 - Nordic Naturals Challenger - Aptos, CA, USA ($100,000) (hard)

Not seen much of his US swing, but I watched quite a few of Evo's matches in the UK and I think the lack of conditioning showed up a bit in his weight of shot. Now I know Dan has never been characterised as a power player, but in this march to the top 50 he was strong on serve and rarely got bullied by the bigger hitters. When on song his forehand was pretty sharp and there was power as well as guile in his backhand.

Right now it feels more reminiscent of his spell after the injuries which set him back following the US Open run against Nishikori etc which got him briefly in the top 150. For a while then he was too soft on the ball (we later learned about the persistent knee trouble) and got regularly beat by journeymen like Vincent Millot etc etc. A lot of those games saw him reverting to that soft-sliced backhand that just doesn't cut the mustard even at Challenger level.

I hope he doesn't get discouraged. It really feels like he needs a Hilts MkII to get him on the right path again...

Yeah, the original Hilts would be best.... and since he is not Kyle's main coach as Fredrik Rosengren is that, I would not have thought that Hilts is indispensable to the Edmund set up.

I watched Dan beat Thomas Fabbiano at Surbiton.  He looked tidy enough.  Fabbiano went on to do very well at Wimbledon. I also watched Dan beat J. Melzer.  Again a tidy victory. I don't think fatigue has been the principal cause of his recent under performance.  Against JJ Wolf  in Kentucky his forehand had its usual weight, it just missed more than it should when he was being aggressive.  To my mind, Dan has not been fatigued in these recent tournaments - maybe he would have been if his matches had been longer and harder.   His level of fitness will not be tested until his level of play improves.

He is still my fav player.  Come on mate, you can do it!

Interesting musical chairs there...

As said earlier clearly not about getting entry into here but I wonder if there's been a bit of a conference about the upcoming US Open. I would guess that those current CRs ( 128 for both pairs ) would get them in whereas Luke & Jonny's CR might not.

Edit : says he forgetting all about Ken Skupski in that. Oh, I don't really know ...

Jay takes the first set comfortably 6-3 against Marchenko.

One of those wouldnt happen at Wimbledon mooments: couldnt see what was happening exactly but umpire says, could you ladies go and do that somewhere else!. It must be so distracting playing futures and challengers sometimes!

Oops cross post Jan!
