Girls - 2018 European Summer Cups (U12/U14/U16/U18)

Our under 14 team (Matilda Mutavdzic, Andrea Pineda and Sofie Johnson) started their quest for a place in the European finals and subsequently the World Juniors with a 3-0 win over Finland, though both Andrea and Matilda were taken to 3 sets.  They are only seeded 3 and will have to beat second seeds Bulgaria tomorrow to qualify for the European finals

Was just thinking. Haven't see Matilda in a draw for a while.

Matilda won her singles but Andrea lost hers, and the two went down in doubles 6-4 7-5 so no qualification for the under 14s

The under 12s start their campaign in the Netherlands tomorrow in a round robin group, followed by a knock-out match against a team from the other group (providing they finish in the top 2). The team (Sophya Devas, Hephzibah Oluwadare and Hannah Read) take on Belarus and Luxemburg

The girls won 2-1 (straight sets wins for Hephzibah and with Hannah in the doubles, either side of a 3 set loss for Sophya) and take on Luxemburg tomorrow

Straightforward for the girls against Luxemburg - 6 bakery sets for Hannah, Hephzibah and Sophya/Hannah. As a result they will win their group of 3, and play the second placed team in the other group on Sunday to determine who progresses to the finals

Smooth passage for the girls to the finals in 12 days time. In the play-offs today they are taking on Denmark, and have won both singles matches (Hephzibah 0 & 2, Sophya 4 & 2) to make the doubles irrelevant

The under 16s are seeded 4th with a team of Amelia Bissett, Alicia Dudeney and Amelia Rajecki and open against Belgium. Top seeds Belarus (who include the JWR28) await the winner in the qualifying match.

The under 18s have been handed the worst possible draw to qualify - Russia so Erin Richardson, Sonay Kartal and Danielle Daley will have their work cut out

The under 16s convincingly saw off Belgium 3-0 (Alicia won 7-5 7-5, Amelia B 6-0 3-6 6-1 and the two Amelias took the doubles 6-3 6-2). Both teams take on strong number 1 seeds tomorrow

Despite a valiant effort from Alicia, who lost 7-5 in the third the under 16s lost 3-0 to Belarus to end their hopes of qualification 9Amelia lost a respectable 5 & 3 to the JWR28, and the Amelias lost the doubles 3 & 3).

Russia was always likely to be too tough for our under 18s - Sonay lost 5 & 0 , Erin 1 & 0 and Danielle/Sonay were edged out 10-8 in the match tiebreak

The under 18s finished third in their group after winning a doubles only 3 way shootout with Israel and Bulgaria. The under 16s also finished third in their group after a comprehensive 3-0 win against Portugal (Amelia R won 0 & 3, Alicia 0 & 2 & Amelia/Amelia 4 & 0)

The Tennis Europe Nations Challenge under 12 finals started today with the team winning their first round robin match 2-1 against Serbia (Hephzibah won in 2, Sophya lost in 2 and Hephzibah/Hannah won the doubles in 2). Unfortunately they are in the same group as the stand-out Czech team (who dropped just 7 games today). Live scores are available at scores.tennisticker.de/fra/sb.html

When we played the Czech Republic in the Winter Cup final the Czechs didn't lose a set, but at least Sophya managed to push Nikola Bartunkova to a 3-6 6-4 6-2 scoreline today. The overall score was again 3-0 (straight sets defeats for Hephzibahin singles and doubles with Hannah). Nevertheless if they beat Italy tomorrow they will play (Russia probably) for bronze on Sunday

They squeaked through against Italy 2-1 with Hephzibah/Hannah surviving a second set bagel to win the doubles 10-8 in the match tiebreak. This was after Hephzibah won and Sophya lost in straight sets. Ukraine and Latvia are currently playing a doubles match tiebreak to decide the places in the other group. If Latvia win then they win the group and Russia finish second, and will be our opponents for bronze. If Ukraine win the doubles it goes down to sets.
