But that is a seriously good win in so many ways. Get in there.

What is his likely route to the title ?

Cracking result to which to wake up!    Shame about the girly kit!  disbelief

L128:  Kyle Edmund WR 49 defeated (11) Kevin Anderson (RSA) WR 12 by 6-7(4) 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4  biggrin

*****

L64:  Kyle Edmund WR 49 vs Denis Istomin (UZB) WR 60 (CH = 33 in August 2012)

Then (up to the QFs) Basilashvili or Bemelmans (who took out Pouille (15) in four), Nishioka (who saw off Kohlschreiber (27) in four)/Seppi/Big Ivo/Sugita (who despatched Sock (8) in four).

First of all -Fantastic. Perhaps Kyle will hold off Cam for world no1 after all lol

Secondly Kyle could do with a dash of pink.

As talented as he is, he is a bit of a 'Henman', and could do with a bit fizz and personality on/off court. By no means an attack on either talented player. Likability goes a long way for branding and popularity. Nadal wore a pink headband today and probably got respect from old and new fans, plus he didn't disrespect his sponsors, which is never a good thing Kyle. The mightier have fallen from sponsorship.

BTW rugby players have worn pink, I wouldn't call them girly. Not to their face anyway lol

Some kit sponsors have in their time though come up with some arguably fairly outlandish designs - particularly some women's ones over the last 2 or 3 years ranging from floaty dresses to rather on the risque side. The men's have at times had different degrees of garishness. The worst is when we have a 'team' in something that you don't like, not that I really like team sponsor kits anyway.

I would hope that kit sponsors will at least take private feedback from their players if they are unhappy. Or is it just "that's what you're wearing"? I suspect it's how high you are up the pecking order - the 'big 4' for instance not getting told this is what you're wearing like it or not.

Certainly agree about the women. I would say some very exploitative designs/material choices. I did see some weird mesh 'longer' shorts with tight shorts underneath for men at the end of last year. I'm not adverse to taking risks with tennis 'fashion' though.

MArketing / advertising /sponsorship rules the day unfortunately.

I'm surprised there aren't more arrangements between sponsors and top players. I know Sharapova and the Wlliams sisters did a range of things. I think I remember the guys doing things in the 80's?

Well the kit got 10/10 from me. First time I've seen him in any sort of stylish outfit, and it looked comfortable also. Just was a bit disappointed to see another player in an identical one in another match......... was it Sousa?

Totally agree, even more annoying when players are playing each other and wearing the same outfit. Even more annoying when they have the same build / height, hair color etc. It's like watching arcade Pong!

Yeah, but is it "comfortable" if Kyles's not entirely happy wearing it? Nike has apparently (& deservedly, IMHO) come in for quite a media pasting, thanks to its tasteless designs.  wink

Although having a huge media reaction, negative or positive can be a a media / marketing dream? Especially when it's causing derision as it creates discussion/advertising. Who knows, perhaps sports stars are even paid to publicly dislike their 'look' to cause controversy / publicity? I believe a lot of sports stars are 'slaves' to their promoters /sponsors

Some interesting comments in Stu Fraser's report on the match in today's Times:

One noticeable change is how much more animated and vocal Edmund is, as part of a concerted effort to stamp his presence on the court.  Rather than keeping his emotions to himself, he is now displaying positive body language through fistpumps and little nods towards his new coach, Fredrik Rosengren, an energetic character who offers much visible encouragement in return.

"He is very passionate," Edmund said.  "He just loves sport and competing.  He's been around for a while.  If you ask anyone, they'll say that's what he's like.  He is just really into it.  When you're playing the match, it just feels like he's playing it with you.  It's obviously good when you look across and your coach is right there with you."

Encouraging...

And towards the end:

Edmund may be the sole British representative in the men's singles draw, but he does no feel alone down under.  On Friday night, he joined Andy Murray - who is having rehabilitation sessions in Melbourne after his hip surgery last week - and Leon Smith as a number of players and coaches associated with the Great Britain Davis Cup team enjoyed dinner.  "It was just nice to get together," Edmund said.  "It's been a while since the Davis Cup."

Yes, I certainly noticed that animation and so much more positive body language in the limited recording I saw. Quite a turnaround and looked natural too. It was great to see !!

Looks as if he really has been unnaturally holding a lot in in the past and to me that cannot have been helpful.

As remarked looked very fit too, indeed quite mean and fit. The boy may be becoming a man !

Loved the Kit. Nike still have a long way to go before plumbing the depths of James Ward's Ted Baker get up of a couple of years ago, now that was a true horror show. Never was a fan of Stan's plaid shorts either.

He seems to share my reservations!     Love the tweet from Judy Murray that he was  "rocking the Liquorice Allsort outfit"!

Nah, Kyle is wearing a pink highlighter pen (and lid/top). Dimitrov is wearing the allsorts.

Roger the Lodger is also a candidate for that one:

Roger Federer controlled the match from the start

Same sponsor!  Strangely, however, I find that shirt far less offensive.

I wonder if players get a choice in the range? I kinda agree with Kyle that with his 'tan' he looked a bit odd in the shirt he wore.

I'm thinking that Fed wouldn't have been seen in the Kyle outfit in a month of Sundays. And I do imagine that at least the higher profile players have a choice.
