Week 2 - WTA Premier ($734K) - Sydney, Australia - Hard

Jo is listed, whether she'll play or not, time will tell. Despite the ninja's 2017 form & ranking, Johanna might still have hoped for a different opener than a rematch of last years final.

R32: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [4] 9 v. Agnieszka RADWANSKA (POL) 28 (CH 2, Jul 2012)
>H2H: 1-2
>2017 Sydney, Australia - WTA Premier - Hard - F - Konta 6-4 6-2
>2016 Beijing, China - WTA Premier Mandatory - Hard - F - Radwanska by 6-4 6-2
>2016 Cincinnati, USA - WTA Premier 5 - Hard - R16 - Radwanska by 6-7(1) 6-4 6-0

Edit: Change the week number in thread title

Or, perhaps not: Aga has just lost to WR121, Sachia Vickery, in the QF in Auckland, 2-6 2-6

Jo vs Aga first up on the main court on Tuesday at 1 pm local, 2 am GMT.

Jo will be the last chance for a seed actually to win a R1 match or even a set with a few bakery products involved.

(3) Ostapenko - lost 7-6(3) 6-1
(5) Mladenovic - lost 6-4 4-2 retired
(6) Stephens - lost 6-3 6-0
(7) Goerges - withdrew
(8) Sevastova - lost 6-3 6-1

(1) Muguruza and (2) V Williams have bye passed the R1 carnage.

Seed carnage it is then.
3-6 5-7

Probably going to be a veeeeerrrrrry long season.

Blow when she's defending a title but at least hip is ok

From the brief part I watched she was really struggling with her serve.

Looks like none of the top players really wanted to be in Sydney this year!
Certainly better if Jo has given herself a shot at a good run in Melbourne by not overtaxing her dodgy hip smile

Pity Jo got caught up in the early season mayhem. But the first couple of weeks can be so very misleading ( maybe best we do our predictions before then ) and she may consciously or subconsciously been effected by the hip problem last week but I hear no problems with it.

Onward ...

Muguruza has withdrawn, making it a clean sweep for the non-seeds

Although, her withdrawal came after playing, and winning, her first match, against Kiki Bertens in R16.

Sydney - biggest womens event in Australia excepting the Open.
A very popular Australian #1 in the final, Barty, against a former world #1 and a well known name down under - having won the Open - Kerber.
Even by the end of the first set, Stadium never more than 50% full. Maybe 2/3 full by the trophy presentation.

Angie won, playing true Kerber tennis all week, that battling, never-give-up style that was missing most of last year. Wim Fissette's reputation keeps accelerating away, he defends his 'title' with his new charge.

Edit: Addendum - WTA write-up includes the lead-in, "In front of a capacity crowd at the Ken Rosewall Arena,": I refer them to their own highlights package.

It's a big stadium. I wouldn't read much into it not being full.

One would hope that the WTA aren't that blasé about things.
