Fed Cup 2018 - Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 - Tallinn, Estonia (7-11 Feb)

The LTA have announced that GB are in Group B, and will play Estonia and Portugal (Fed cup website not yet updated)

The winners will play one of Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia or Sweden

So we have avoided Latvia, but Estonia will be very tough, with Kontaveit and Kanepi named in their team.

Plus they have home advantage.

Hev will have to up her game from Brisbane where she lost to both of them in straight sets only winning 8 games over the 2 matches

Trying to be optimistic; on straight rankings does not look so bad:

Konta 9 vs Kontaveit 34

Watson 74 vs Kanepi 79

Kanepi has a good draw after that win against Cibulkova. Kontaveit and Kanepi could even meet in the fourth round. They could be very high in confidence.

With Kanepi, the injury history is going to be a factor.
She played yesterday with a massive strapping on that problematic left thigh, from glute to knee. It's been getting noticably larger match-by-match this year.
If she holds together, she is looking fearsome; Cibulkova could barely see the ball; I'd wager Kaia is currently hitting the ball harder than even Keys.
If Kaia has a deep-ish run here (R16 - I haven't checked her draw) that might aid GB, as her history unfortunately suggests her body tends to fail her regularly. Although, as we know with that match against Laura at Wimbledon, for GB, that failure can come one match too late for our advantage.

I hope every one is healthy, as the Estonians at full power would be excellent entertainment, and I also presume that being the home nation, the streaming for that match will be more reliable than it has otherwise been for other matches from Talinn in previous years.

Interesting. Though Jo and Heather could meet in the semi final

Estonia is tough on home ground. But I think we would have some advantage in a crucial doubles.

Difficult draw. Kanepi and Kontaveit are both solid competitors.

Watched both matches that Hev played in Brisbane and she was totally outplayed by both.

So it's coming that time of year again. They're all going to battle it out in a big warehouse somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Without the backdrop of the GB men winning DC, I don't think Konta would be bothering with this. She'll only be there due to a feeling of duty. For her, the only thing worse than playing Fed Cup would be having it known that she declared herself unavailable for Fed cup.

I would have thought 2 or 3 guaranteed matches in a team environment would be perfect for her right now.

Jo has already said she is gearing up for the FedCup. I agree with Wolf, I think this is a good opportunity for her to get her mojo back, plus the team environment will be good for her, as the others too.

Well, on the Estonian front, Kontaveit has just dismissed Ostapenko in the Baltic battle, and looks frighteningly good.
Kanepi couldn't last in the heat against Carla, and wilted in the third. After the first set, Carla played her very smart though, rarely givuing Kanepi's cannon forehand any ammo, and always moving her out wide on the BH to accentuate that wings weakness by also getting Kanpi on the move to hit it. In the indoor cool of Talinn, not sure how that would work out, though Kaia is obviously managing that thigh week-to-week, and her mobility has never been her strength - her... erm... strength has been her strength!

If both the Estonians and our GB players show about the levels at the Fed Cup, that they have Melbourne, then we stand little chance. But, there's almost three weeks until then; anything could happen.

Estonia have fielded a weakened team, so we are big favourites now.

2pm gmt start. There doesn't seem to be any tv coverage scheduled at the moment, so will look for a stream then.
