Boys & Girls: 53rd Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships, clay - Grade 1 (Week 22)

The main draw gets underway here tomorrow with Barnaby Smith the one player who could win a Special Exempt into the French Open with a good performance here. He should be joined in the main draw by Anton Matusevich and Ali Collins.  Qualifying has started with round 1 wins for Lilian Mould and Victoria Subev. They are joined in QR2 by the seeded Holly Fischer and Emma Raducanu (two qualifying rounds played today) with live scoring at http://www.tennisticker.de/bel/sb.html?tournid=3171  Holly played Camille Townsend earlier this month, and it is Emma's turn to meet the American twin today.

Resilience from Holly today, coming from a set and 4-2 down to overcome a Chinese player who won a G4 earlier in the year. Emma had no such difficulty against the twin winning 1 & 1. Both are scheduled back out later today. Lillian came close to upsetting the top seed (ranked inside the top 100) taking the first set 6-1 and reaching 5-5 in the second before losing 1-6 7-5 6-2. Victoria lost 4 & 1

I hope the long match doesn't hurt Holly's chances later today.

Holly and Emma are back on court for final qualifying - Emma up 6-4 5-3 but Holly trails 3-5. There are 7 slots in the main draw for qualifiers and a lucky loser, and oddly 6 of those slots are in Q v Q matches (with the other being against an SE). In the main draw Anton plays someone who won a G2 recently.

Boys R1 (L48)

(10) Barnaby Smith bye
Anton Matusevich v Bogdan Pavel (ROU)

Girls R1 (L48)

Diae El Jardi (MAR) v Ali Collins

Emma gets the slot against the Special Exempt, so plays both twins in the same tournament Holly isn't successful in the LL draw.

Ali and Anton are currently on court - Ali having just broken for 3*-2 Anton 1*-2

Girls R1 (L48)

Diae El Jardi (MAR) v Ali Collins
(SE) Katya Townsend (USA) v (Q) Emma Raducanu

Anton lost 6-4 6-3 but Ali overcame a wobble (up a set and a break, then pegged back to 3-3 in the decider from a break up) to win 6-2 5-7 6-3

Good stuff from Emma and Ali.

Holly hasn't really made the strides I was expecting. Maybe she isn't fully 100% match fit and ready. Maybe i'm expecting too much too soon.

I don't think it's really possible to say that someone who basically wasn't ranked last year and is now the top ranked player in the world for her age 'hasn't made the strides' expected.

Yes I think we have to remember both Emma and Holly are year 10 at school. A year off GCSE's and dipping their toes into U18 Grade 1 tennis, so one would expect them to win a few and loose a few

Barely 14 and ranked 179? I'd take that! I'd take still 14, doing full-time education, and making it into the second round of a G1, too. Quite excited about the prospects for both young women. And for Ms Collins.
