Other events - week 21

I'm all for clever tournament picking, and MJ certainly seems to have got the hang of it, in what must be an amazing trip to Africa - brilliant experience.

She's in a G5 in Mozambique this week that only has 13 entrants in total. MJ is directly into the QF and plays tomorrow (and directly into the semis of the dubs)

In Georgia, G5:

Charlie lost out in the qualis but gets a win in the doubles:

R1: Mykhailo KVANTALIANI (GEO) / Charlie PENMAN (GBR)     6-3 6-2     Daniil IVANOV (RUS) / Denis TIMIROV (RUS)

In Montenegro, G5:

R1:

Joseph WHITE (GBR)     7-6(3) 2-6 6-0     Tin DIZDAREVIC (CRO)

Jake HERSEY (GBR) [2]     6-3 6-3     Janos FEKETE (SVK)

R2:

Jake HERSEY (GBR) [2]     6-1 6-3     Tin KRSTULOVIC (SLO)

Bodin ZARKOVIC (SRB) [6]     6-4 6-0     Joseph WHITE (GBR)

In the dubs:

R1:

Barney FITZPATRICK (GBR) / Jake HERSEY (GBR) [4]     7-6(4) 6-2     Maj TOMAC (SLO) / Marko ZALUKAR (CRO)

Alexandros SKORILAS (GRE) / Vasileios VARDAKIS (GRE) [1]     6-2 7-6(5)     Antonio MUNIZ HIDALGO (ESP) / Joseph WHITE (GBR)

QF:

Barney FITZPATRICK (GBR) / Jake HERSEY (GBR) [4]     6-1 6-2     Mile MATIC (CRO) / Mark MESARIC (SLO)

In Lebanon, G5:

R1:

Peter ALAM (GBR)     3-6 6-0 6-0     Rahul JAIDEEP (IND)

Zyaan AHMED (GBR) [2]     6-1 6-0     Abhinav NALLAPAREDDY (IND)

Daisy CHAPMAN (GBR)     6-7(6) 6-3 6-1     Sara NASSIF (LIB)

Well done, Daisy (born 2003) - first ITF junior match - and first win !

In Estonia, G4:

R1:

Josh WILSON (GBR)     6-4 6-1     Artsiom BARDZIN (BLR)

Indianna SPINK (GBR)     6-0 6-1     Polina RAMENSKAJA (EST)

In Sweden, G4:

Montenegro, G5:

FINAL: Jake HERSEY (GBR) [2] JWR 313 (born 2000) def. Alexandros SKORILAS (GRE) [3] JWR 390 (born 2000) 4-6 6-4 6-4

And Josh Wilson carries on in cracking form, taking out the second seed (500 places higher) this time, in style:

Estonia, G4:

Josh's third tournament this year - the first 2 (Nottingham) ended in the semis and final, so let's hope for a progression

Unfortunately, MJ came very, very close in both finals but didn't win either.

FINAL: Lara Claudia VAN DER MERWE (RSA) [2] 6-2 2-6 6-4 M J CHANGWEREZA (GBR) [1]

DUBS FINAL: Sara EL GHAZOULY (EGY) / Danica MALAN (RSA) [2] 0-6 7-5 [11-9] M J CHANGWEREZA (GBR) / Lara Claudia VAN DER MERWE (RSA) [1]

It's been a good enough trip but, in such a small draw, I imagine she'll be a bit disappointed. Well done to her, though.

No luck for Charlie either in Georgia. But he'll get a ranking out of this, and is staying next week (with the Soto group, I imagine).

Final

Nikoloz DAVLIANIDZE (GEO) / Zura TKEMALADZE (GEO) [1] 6-2 6-2 Mykhailo KVANTALIANI (GEO) / Charlie PENMAN (GBR)

I remember seeing Josh's name in a whole heap of Canadian competitions last year (adult ones, I think, when he must have been only 15, coming up 16). Do you know if he lives out there or was just temporarily based there/long holiday?

PS Forgot to add Harry's results. After he won R1 in Sweden, G4 (see top of page):

R2 (L16): Harry WENDELKEN (GBR) [1]     6-2 6-4     Joachim Andreas SCHAEFER (NOR)

QF: Mathys ERHARD (FRA)     0-6 6-3 6-4     Harry WENDELKEN (GBR) [1]

I don't know much about Josh except he has had connections with Reigate/Dorking for many years.  He played a smattering of junior and Pro events in 2015/2016 in Canada/USA (none in the UK), suggesting he was based there for some time. http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/reigatelawntennisclub/news/junior-tennis-newsletter-03052017-1796067.html has a picture of him with Nottingham trophies, and refers to him training with the same person (James) for several months, so I guess he returned to Surrey in late 2016

Thanks for this, David.

I believe that Josh is now at Gosling (which makes sense with what you say about his Surrey base) - there are photos of him and Ed Corrie there.

He's playing the Premier BT event this week in Oxford, so interesting to keep an eye on......
