FED CUP

9-12 February 2017 - any ideas where?

Hopefully - Jo and Heather will both be available alongside a rejuvenated Laura and Tara and we will get promoted.

Personally I am not too bothered, obviously we should pick the best team available but essentially given the developing cohort of players we have we should've flexible and look at the medium to long term.

Hev has been a stalwart and I think really enjoys the competition and will be there, JoKo is not quite at the level Andy is at and probably has less capacity to cope ie continue to improve sustain her rank and similarly Laura should be given flexibility as essentially a work in progress although probably would be desperate to play if fit and able, however if Tara is better ranked she should be selected.

And if not we will have to rely on a couple of unknown transitioning juniors in Katie Swan and Freya who although less likely to secure promotion would have an outside chance and very much in the way Davis Cup has grown the depth of men's tennis provide invaluable experience

So, back to the original question - who will be captain ? An ex-player, or a coach, or ......

I don't think it really matters. Easy job anyone can do it as long as they have a decent team.

I think that highly debatable observing how different Davis and Fed Cup captains have gone about the job.

Some are intrinsically more suitable for the role than others, which I find no great surprise.

Yes you need the team, but it also most certainly helps having a captain provide good back-up and atmosphere etc.

Anyone can do it, some much better than others.

Sorry that I haven't a particular name to suggest, but it is not for anyone.

I can't help but think that the perfect candidate was cruelly taken from us.

The first job the new captain should look at is to heal the rift between Naomi and the LTA so that Naomi can play

Annie K is the obvious one, but given FedCup gets very little media scrutiny, we will just have to wait and see. Iain B does do the quasi captaincy role already, so could do it by himself.

I'm guessing it will back in Eilat, and I'm pretty certain Jo will play this year, backed up Hev/Laura/Tara. If Joss and Anna really get their act together, they will be tough to drop.

The most important thing is getting our best team available which hasn't happened since the two years we got to the world group 2 playoffs. But given how important the mental side of the game is, the coach can also make a big difference.

I'm not really a fan of picking two specialist doubles players in a team of four in an event where you have to play 4 ties in 4 days as it leaves no margin for injury or tiredness. For that reason, if Laura does continue to play at her recent improved level, I can see Anna missing out (harsh as that would be).

Having come close to getting into the World Group 2 a few times it would be great to finally achieve it in what might be the final year of the current format.

I agree, I wouldn't be picking two specialist doubles players ( especially two with no recent singles credentials ) for such a week long series.

We've done it when really short for a 3rd singles player, but if and when we have at least 3 pretty well ranked and in-form singles players available ( and all mentioned are pretty good doubles players ) then purely on a risk basis for one it has to make sense to take at most one doubles specialist.

I would mine the seam of coaches supporting the Davis cup squad. Why not maximise the benefits of their experience around preparation and mindset, seems a no brainier. I don't think anybody can do it and win, key to that is getting the best squad out consistently which places people skills as a prerequisite for the job.

FED CUP 2017 - Euro/Africa Zone Group 1 - Tallinn, Estonia (week commencing 6 Feb)

Venue: Tallink Tennis Centre
City: Tallinn, Estonia
Surface: Hard court - indoor
Tickets: TBC
Start times: TBC

Round-robin format.

Pool winners will compete in promotion play-offs to determine which two nations will advance to the World Group II play-offs.

The bottom-placed nations in the pools will compete in relegation play-offs to determine which two nations will be relegated to Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2018.

Two promoted.
Two relegated.

Based on the current Fed Cup rankings I guess these will be the seeding pots

Poland
Croatia
Great Britain
Serbia

Turkey
Georgia
Hungary
Israel

Bulgaria
Portugal
Estonia
Austria

Latvia
Bosnia/Herzegovina

I presume our team will JoKo, Heather and 2 from Tara, Joss and Anna.

Look at that list I would say that if a) Jo plays this year and b) we avoid Poland and Aga then we will have a great chance of qualifying.
