Blotted her copy book in the final game, by conceding her only BP (but played a great winner to save it).

So...
If it's Genie on Center, it's a Fed Cup atmosphere, and if she wins it could be.... well, let's just wait.
Well done again Jo just keeps going. That's 7 consecutive match wins, and considering her bye last week meant she started late in the week, they've come in little over a week.
I'm wondering when the press are really going to notice, and when we can start talking contention for SPOTY?

SPOTY?! Are you on crack?

She'd have to win US Open bare minimum to even be in contention for the shortlist.

Yeah, someone really should've told Greg about that rule, huh?

I would think that Jo's looking good for getting on the shortlist even with the Olympics still to come ( hey, an Olympic title would help further ) and without winning the US Open or Olympic title ( I think that she's got enough in the locker already ).

I can't see her being anywhere near to winning it or even being top tennis player with that Dunblane chappee around, but it would be good to see her in the 12 and further recognition of such a great year already.

A lot depends on the Olympics, as Indy suggests. But I'd agree about being in contention for the shortlist, both because of her accomplishments and because of the extraordinarily rapid way in which she's gone from being a solid "second-tier" player to one of the top in the world. If she cracks the top 10, it would be rather a pity if she weren't on the shortlist. And who knows? The Olympics are on hard courts. She likes hard courts. If she's not completely exhausted (a bit of a fear) she could well have a medal chance.

So, have I got this right?

Jo needs to win tonight and hope that one of Kuznetsova or Keys loses for a top 10 spot and a top 8 seed berth for the Olympics?

Probably

By reaching the QF Jo has gone live WR 13, ahead of Kvitova.

If tonight she reaches the SF she will go ahead of Suarez Navarro and Cibulkova. If either Kuznetsova or Keys loses she will go ahead of them to WR 10 live.

And Azarenka and Halep will not be at the Olympics.

Sorted then, not quite ...

The only other potential fly in the ointment is Pavlyuchenkova. A SF takes Jo to 3100 points, Pav will go to 3110 if she wins the title.

For tonight to do it, we need Jo through and Kuznetsova out ( since Keys plays Pav one of them clearly goes ).

Oh, and Pavylyuchenkova is going to the Olympics. The ITF has approved the Russian tennis team. The very idea of Russian tennis doping ...

Thanks, AliBB.

I agree their "if Kuznetsova loses" scenario. I don't quite agree that if Kuznetsova wins Jo has to reach the final. That would do it, but so would Jo reaching the SF, Keys losing tonight and Pavlyuchenkova not winning the title. The first scenario is simpler though. Jo wins, Svetlana loses, sorted

Anyway, certainly be a big moment to go top 10 as they go on to point out. I won't argue their historic facts, because err I don't know.

Kuznetsova simplifies everything by losing to Halep 3-6 6-1 6-1. Cheers, Simona.

Win tonight and Jo will go top 10 !!!

Heather's doubles QF is due off from 6.30 pm local ( 11.30 pm ). Should serve as a nice warm up for the match that is second on central following the Pavlyuchenkova vs Keys match also due off at 11.30 pm BST ...

Jo's match of Destiny. No pressure

I often wonder how much athletes know and obsess before hand about things like that, and it reminds me of this old Peanuts cartoon

From that podcast that Fitzy did, we know Naomi was very acutely aware of which matches and results needed to happen to get her in to the Top 100. I suppose it can serve as inspiration or burden depending on the individual.

What a great 10 days its been for Johanna Konta. Its not so much her win at Stanford but how she won that match against Venus Williams, to have lost that second set lead and then come back to win the 3rd set showed real mental strength and confidence.

She has a great chance to get to the semi-final tonight but there will be a lot of pressure on her given the possibility of breaking into the top 10 and Kucova must be playing well to have beaten Bouchard in the previous round.

It's still amazing to think that Konta was outside of the top 100 this time last year and she deserves every credit and respect for her achievements over the last year.
