Week 7 - ATP 250 - Marseille, France - Indoor Hard

Great to see no less than 4 Brits giving ATP qualifying a go here:

QR1: Josh Milton WR 368 v Yannick Jankovits (FRA) WR 328 (= CH) *
QR1: Marcus Willis WR 342 v (q5) Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA) WR 116 (CH 107 last month)
QR1: Dan Smethurst WR 296 v Jonathan Eysseric (FRA) WR 271 (CH 202 in 2013) #
QR1: Alex Ward WR 325 v (wc) Mischa Zverev (GER) WR 916 (CH 45 in 2009)

* H2H 1-0 - Josh won 5-7 7-5 6-1 in Chiswick in 2011
# H2H 0-1 - Eysseric edged Dan 3-5 4-1 10:8 at Roehampton juniors in 2007

Not bad draws for an ATP event. Marcus got the short straw.

Eysseric was the world number one junior in 2007.

Interesting case of a JWR 1 not making a very big impact on the adult circuit. No real reason as far as I know.

He's just done a big crowd funding too - is up to 6,000 euros at the moment.

Hasn't has a great start to the year, though, in terms of tennis.

I think PHH has a tendency to bottle it and make life hard for himself - snatches defeat out of the jaws of victory and all that. Go for it, Marcus.

Jankovits was the guy who played Bettles three times in close succession last year - thrashing him the first time, winning the second and then Bettles getting the win third time lucky.

He's a good case in point of someone who didn't break into even the top 500 until he was about 25. (Nothing spectacular since, either, of course, but it's going in the right direction).

Allez, les gars !

Not just Willbomb then for Bob to see, great idea for the lads to attack this event, nothing ventured nothing gained.

As paulisi pointed out - and very worthwhile noting again - you've only got win one match and there's a cheque for 450 euros.

Given that's only two (possibly three) hotel nights to cover, if you win one round and lose the next, you'll probably have covered your expenses with one win. Not like playing three rounds of challengers before getting a penny. Or playing practically the whole week of a 10k before getting a similar sum. Yes, it seems a very worthwhile gamble.

It's good to see a good British contingent, even if there's a good possibility that no players will qualify or possibly win a round. As has been said, it is a fair effort financially and it's also positive to see players trying things above Futures and gaining experience on an ATP level (even if it's only qualifying, the facilities etc. are ATP standard). It has been said many times before on the board but to see groups of players going to tournaments together could surely only be a benefit in terms of both cost and mentality, with both comfort and competitiveness increased.

I'm surprised Ed Corrie or Dan Cox didn't have a go.
