Baghdatis goes out

The big news from day 3, Monfils winning 7-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0

That's a massive upset, Monfils played some great stuff at times tonight and his serve was on fire but Baggy was dreadful, made over 50 ues and his volleying was dire. It's been a poor start to the year for him - got hammered in Doha by Soderling, lost early last week and out in rd2 of the AO.

Will he slip out of the top 20 ?

How far will Monfils go now ? Next up he's got Gasquet, they've played twice before, both times indoors. Gasquet won 7-5, 6-1 in 2004 and Monfils won 7-6, 6-2 in 2005.

safin was a lucky boy, he was at 30-30 serving at 5-6 2 sets to 1 down with sela in control really when the rain came. obvisuly gave him enough time to re compose and obviously sela probably got a bit of the jitters just thinking of what he was only 2 points away of achieving. of course traigth afte the break safin wrapped it up wiht out dropping a further game. tough luck on sela there.

I make Baggy on number 20 right at the moment, but of course many people could overtake soon. Tursunov by winning his next (2nd round) match, Youzhny by winning his next (3rd round) match - against Fed! - and Hrbaty and Safin lurk not too far behind. To name just a few.

Thanks Mad It'll be interesting to see how Baggy does this year, I think that after reaching the top 10 in the autumn, lots of people thought that he'd be into the top 5 pretty soon but he's started 2007 poorly. Not too much to defend though during the US hard court swing starting at the end of this month, so maybe he can work his way back up.

I caught the end of this match. Is Monfils crazy or not? That boy will do himself some serious damage if he isn't more careful!

But thanks to him for taking out Baggy (a threat to Andy's ranking position)

im glad monfils won ... i love watchin him play and i think he can be a great player if he doesnt get injured (mainly from diving round the court)

I watched the end of the fourth set and listened to the fifth (was washing up so couldn't see the telly). At the end of the fourth Monfils could barely walk, he just tanked the points. His last service game was REALLY weird though. He was hitting winners off the serve and not moving at all. Baggy just returned right to him so he hit a winner. Then the last point he jogged into the net, so Baggy did too, they were hitting the ball soo slowly they were walking to it. It was really strange. Did anyone else see?
