Who will win the Aussie Open ?

Who do we think will win the Aussie Open ?

Federer is odds-on favourite by miles but for me, Roddick is probably the next likely to take the title. OK he had a dodgy match against Tsonga but his form at Kooyong last week was sensational, finally beating Federer for the first time in nearly 4 years must be a massive psychological boost for me. It was at an exhibition tournament but still. Last two times they've played when it matters, Roddick has also come so close too. He was not far away from taking a 2 sets to 1 lead in the US Open final and held match points when they played in the masters cup.

It would be a mouthwatering semi but both have substantial obstacles along the way. Federer is likely to face Youzhny in rd3, Djokovic in rd4 and Baghdatis/Gasquet/Robredo in the quarters.

Roddick probably has Safin in rd3 but if he gets through that I don't think anyone else in that quarter will be able to stop him.

Nadal's progress will be interesting, he says he's 100% and not feeling the groin anymore. From rd4 onwards though he has really tough matches - Murray then Blake/Hewitt/Gonzo and in the 3rd quarter his nemisis Berdych lurks plus Davydenko and Malisse.

i really do think that it could be A-Rods year .

I think it will be andy Roddick V Blake in the final and A-rod wins in 4

There are several people who can beat Roddick along the way....cant see past Fed again...unfortunately....I would love a new face to win it...Murray...nah not this year....US Open 2008 will be his first GS win (Says he who lost 100ams on Ljubo today!!)

I watched the first set Tsonga v A Rod and Tsonga was well worth it and to loose the next 3 sets 6-7 6-3 6-3 was a great effort....Tsonga hits the ball hard and he serves well.....if Tsonga had a bit more consistancy he could have taken A Rod much closer and maybe even caused an upset....

i think federer will win the AO but with a fight. Murray will progress to the second week, but we have to see the progress of Davydenko, Nalbandian, Nadal as well as Murray to see if he can be a quarter finalist

One interesting thing about Fed and this year's AO title is that he will have to equal his longest-ever winning streak (35) to reach the Final and beat it to win the AO. His current winning streak is 30 (including the win against Phau) since he lost to Andy.

He will also catch Lendl for the second longest ever run of consecutive weeks at no. 1 at the end of the AO, and will overtake Connors' longest ever run of consectuive weeks at no. 1 (160) at the end of February, even if Uncle Toni shoots him tomorrow and Rafa wins every match between now and then!

By the way, Andy is only the fifth youngest DA in the draw. Three of the four younger players (del Potro, Querrey and Djokovic) won yesterday and Korolev, like Andy, plays tonight.

Apart from Safin, I don't think that anyone in Roddick's quarter has the game to stop him. Ancic is scheduled to meet him in rd4 and he vastly improved in 2006 but Roddick's won all their previous matches, I think he has the edge over super-Mario.

Then in the quarters, it'll probably be Stepanek/Ferrer/Fish, I can't see any of those guys beating A-Rod.

Roddick-Safin will be in rd3 on Friday, should be a one to savour. They're tied 3-3 in head-to-heads, Roddick won 3 really tight matches in 2004 but Safin won their last encounter on indoor clay in 2006 in the DC.

Safin's form has been dodgy so far, shouldn't have lost 2 sets against the likes of Becker or Sela so you have to favour Roddick a lot but Safin definately has the weapons to trouble A-Rod.

Lol, I knew you'd predict Blake to make the final

Having said that, he was brilliant yesterday against Moya, on that evidence he's the form player so far. Whoever beats him is going to have to serve really well, Blake's returning was so good

haha i wouldnt have just predicted him to win coz i am a massive fan lol,,, hense why i didnt predict Murray to get 2 final... i do honestly think that Blake is the best on form player in his half of the draw.. so therefore i think he will progress to the final... but then i think Roddick is playing amaing at the moment as as long as he manages to see off Safin which i think he will i think he can take the title... he will have alot of confidence aswell when he meets federer having beaten him last week

I've gone for federer to beat andy in the final. I think Berdych has a shot for a final place although im biased as these three are my favourite three players.

I think Roddick will flake out soon, possibly against Safin, who despite struggling (to say the least) through to the 3rd round so far is due a very good performance and friday is as good a chance as any....

For what it's worth, I've gone for Rafa.

I actually wouldn't bet my own money on Nadal beating Federer, but it's no fun just going for fed!

I think a lot of people are underestimating Nadal. After Wimbledon he decided to work on changing his serve, all round game, etc., to be more competitive on all surfaces (he particularly wants to win Wimbledon). I'm sure he'll have his game back to its best (or better) for this one, so if he is fit I think he can beat anyone bar Federer.

So who knows, maybe Federer won't win, in which case I reckon on Nadal.

(It also means I'm saying Nadal will beat Andy if it happens, but I always take the pessimistic view on Andy predictions!)

I think that so long as he can maintain his level, Roddick has an excellent chance this year. I think that he is due a win against Federer, he's come very very close the last few times and then last week he managed to win. Yes it was only an exhibition match but a win is a win and I think that may have made enough cracks and dents in the pyschological barrier for Roddick to take the match points next time. I also really don't like Federer so don't want him to win!

Blake is very much on form as well so I'd give him a good chance, and I do want to throw Murray's name into the mix, he seems to be playing very well so far this year and I think we can hope for great things from him. Having said that, I'm not sure he's ready mentally to win a grand slam quite yet.
