Thought we might as well have a thread in the build up to the first Grand Slam of the Year.
Jonny Marray is in mid air right now, and will arrive early in the morning on Friday in Australia, quite a trek.
Peter Lundgren, British Davis Cup Coach, will be in Australia for the week of Qualies, and will be working with the British guys see www.jonnymarray.net for details.
Also expected in Australia are Bogdanovic, Bloomfield, Goodall, Marray, Mackin and possibly Jamie Baker.
Who do you see qualifying? Who are you expecting to crash and burn?
The courts are faster this year, but still pretty bouncy and so would maybe be expected to suit Boggo, Goodall and Macca more than the others, and with Josh having qualified for the last 2 Grand slams and having been brought up in Australia, he might be a draw that no-one would relish.
Boggo will be seeded, but having skipped the Aussie Open last year and gone out in the 2nd Qualifying Round in the two previous years, might be seen as not fancying the surface. However Boggo is a much better player than the one who went out in 2004 &5 and will be under pressure to justify his seeding and qualify.
Bloomfield and Marray will not be under any pressure having both made first round exits last year, and would not be expected to like the courts, but their good form toward the end of last year, means they should be watched.
Mackin has a game that I think stacks up really well for these courts and he could well be a dark horse, if he can shake off any rustiness in the first game, he could shock a few people.
Jamie Baker isnt even sure of being in the event, but I suspect that wholesale drop outs will give him a chance and his good showing in Doha Qualies suggest that he has come back from the Winter break stronger and raring to go after a difficult winter on the US Challenger circuit.
Anyway that's my thoughts, what do you guys think?
i have gone for boggo and goodall, the AOQ for some reason never seems to go down well with out boys, but of those participating Alex currently has the most ability. He knows he can qualify for slams and i think alex has a belief in himself that he can make it now that maybe was lacking b4. My only concern is if the heat gets to him, but maybe his work out in the states will help there. He is also going to play syndey quailes so a bit of practice in the heat there might help (maybe he can go and watch the Oz cricket team for tips on how to win ).
Josh must be briming with confidecne when it comes to slam qualies and i think out of the rest he has the best chance of making it through, his loss to auckland from his point of view was quite disaponiting, buy it was a close match vs a big server.
reaisitcly we will know more once the draw is out, there is also the (slim) possibility that if alex does well in sydney he would miss the qulaies, but untill i see the draw alex and josh for me are the most likley, altough i can see all the other winns in a round at least.

I doubt that anyone has a good chance of making it barring Boggo. It depends on the draw for Goodall. It'll be interesting to see what Mackin does as well.
Bloomers and Marray still need to improve on surfaces that can't be mastered by a big serve alone, so they'll need to play their best tennis to make it.
I reckon that Baker will make it. Last year the qualies cut was 380. In 2005 it was as low as 434!!!

Agree with the general point but Jonny isnt a big server really just a great volleyer.
lol not really. very few have confidecne in alex to achive i think, probably cause he has failed to live up to what we know he can. josh hasnt doen that (yet).
so probably none of up would be suprised if alex qualifies and none would be suprised if he doesnt :)

If Boggo continues his forn shown at the Sydney qualies especially against Delic, then he's got a chance. However, i think that match wasnt of high standard, but reading from the thread, he was serving well, so that should help him. also, with 3 matches in 3 days, the heat shouldnt be a factor since he was training in florida.
i think Bloomfield got a slim chance, but he only does well if he serves exceptionally like he did at a challenger tourney late last year. Goodall got a great chance, but i think it depends on the draw. if he gets a draw like the US Open, the hes got a shot, but if he play a top seed in the second round then i doubt he'll go any further. Also, did he go to Florida as well?
There will be no grand slam qualifying hat-trick for Josh unfortunately - according to Neil Harman in the Times, he's withdrawn after having a tough time in India - I imagine he's feeling the strain of having played so many matches last year too. Hope he's not going to be 2007's Matt Smith ...

Terrible news, and all the more frustrating for being so predictable.
If he's just taking Oz off to start at wrexham maybe not a bad idea, but if he has a stinking first quarter of the year then India will look like a very bad decision.
Having said that, dont reckon many of our players will pick up 30 points in Oz, which is what Josh got in india I think.
Boggo is currently 12th seed in qualifying and I would expect him to move up at least a couple of places before play starts on Thursday (not that it will make much difference!)

Yes, that's right - even if he qualified for the AO and lost in R1, he wouldn't get 30 points, so if it gives him a better chance in Wrexham too, maybe it won't be such a bad thing after all. IT would have been nice to see him go for the hat-trick though.
