Tennis star banned from practising in his own back garden

One of our brightest tennis prospects has been banned from practising in his back garden.

Oliver Golding, Britain's junior number one for the past three years, has been told by his local council that he can no longer use his court after school following complaints from neighbours.

They claimed they were being disturbed by Oliver, 13, and other children who use the court. The ban comes into effect at 4pm on six days a week - precisely when he most needs to use it.

Oliver's mother and coach Sandra said: "This ridiculous decision is going to threaten his training and cripple his prospects. We always hear how this country needs young tennis players but if this is how they are treated then what chance do they have?

"Oliver is representing Britain in the European Championships next year. From the end of this month he can't do the two hours per day practice he needs to maintain this standard in his own back garden."

Mrs Golding bought her semi-detached home in EastTwickenham in 1991 after discovering it had a floodlit tennis court. Since then she has been using it to coach local children after school and it was there that Oliver learned the game. Neighbours have complained about noise and the number of cars dropping off players.

Don't really know what to say. I guess that there is logic in what the neigbours say, but the boy needs to practice....
Good to see Oliver training though.

And very unique article there, David.

Oh the poor dears ...

Twickenham? I wouldn't have thought that this was one of Britain's more deprived areas. In fact average house prices in Twickenham are about 3 times the national average, with an average semi going for a bit more than £500,000. And this one's garden is big enough to hold a tennis court and a swimming pool. So £750,000 would seem to be a fair guess at its value. So this "single mother" is not exactly on the breadline.

And hang on, didn't young Ollie play a leading role in that box office smash hit (ha ha) Greyfriars Bobby? Are we to believe that he was not paid for his time and talent? And while he's not exactly in the Tom Cruise earnings league, one might think that £100,000 would be a reasonable guess at his pay. Surely that would pay for one or two lessons, rather than have to go begging for charity?

And I never believe it when proud parents start boasting about their children being the best in the country (yes, Jason Spence I'm thinking of you). And in fact Oliver cannot lay a valid claim to that title. George Morgan is the highest ranked player in his age group, and has beaten young Ollie 6-0 6-1 and 6-4 6-0 the last two times they have met. So I think that he might have a rather better claim to the title.

Oh well, I guess it sells papers.

Yeah, it must be a mistake.

I think this is ridiculous. Maybe they can ban her teaching others, as it can be seen as commercial activity, but surely her own son has to be allowed to practice in his own back garded (even if he's rich). Also, the timespan is ridiculous, until 6PM would have protected the neighbours enough!
