According to the LTA, the wind has been tricky for the players to deal with this week.
Extremely impressive wins for Georgie, Naomi and Natasha
Emily beat Dominikovic's sister Danielle in 3 sets last week. She wasn't 100% for that match, played with a dodgy stomach so it was an impressive achievement to beat someone 300 places higher. Although Evie Dominikovic is unranked, if she's been top 100 she's still going to be an extremely tough opponent, just maybe not with the match sharpness and fitness which she had at her peak. What caused such a dramatic rankings fall, I presume it was injury ?
Good to see that Karen recovered well from her injury and is back to winning ways
Final round matches:
N Cavaday [GB][1] v A Szili [Aus][15]
G Stoop [GB][3] v E Barry [NZ][13]
A Matic [Ger][2] v C Ricketts [GB][14]
K Paterson [GB][5] v E Dominikovic [Aus]
N Khan [GB][6] v K Wlodarczak [Aus][12]
Naomi has the best draw, her opponent is ranked 848 [reached 402 back in 2002]. Szili qualified last week and beat Rodionova in rd1 before losing in straights in rd2. Her best result this year, was reaching a 10K final in Australia a couple of months ago.
Georgie's match is trickier than it looks. Ellen Barry may be only ranked 809 but she's just 17 and last week she made the quarters, beating Jane O'Donoghue in straights in rd2. She's also made another 25K quarter-final, in Melbourne, this autumn. In the juniors, she reached a high of 26 in 2005 before concentrating on seniors this year.
Tough final round draw for Claire. Matic is ranked 407 [peaked at 225 in 2004]. She lost to Mel South in rd2 last week in 3 sets.
Natasha's opponent is ranked 722. She got a wildcard last week and won a round before losing to the 7th seed.
No news of the final qualifying round. However, the main draw confirms Cavaday and Stoop as the Brits qualifiers. Sadly, Dominikovic bt Paterson, as well as Khan and Ricketts losing out.
MD:
Jane O'Donoghue v Sophie Ferguson (AUS) [5] [wr:212]
Naomi Cavaday v Trudie Musgrave (AUS) [321]
Rebecca Llewellyn v Raquel Kops-Jones (USA) [8] [261]
Georgie Stoop v (Q) Claire De Gubernatis (FRA) [440]
Pity for O'Donoghue to play a promising player in Ferguson, who beat Petrova 2 seasons ago. Cavaday and Stoop are good chances to make R2.
Results:
Rebecca Llewellyn lost Raquel Kops-Jones 62 63
Tough for Becky considering she was playing a seed.
K Paterson [GB][5] lost to E Dominikovic [Aus] 6-4, 3-6, 2-6
N Khan [GB][6] lost to K Wlodarczak [Aus][12] 6-1, 5-7, 3-6
Naomi's opponent retired with a thigh strain, super win for Georgie against a tricky opponent ! What happened to Natasha though after that storming first set I was sure she'd qualify. From reading reports of her matches last week, she seems to struggle at times with keeping her focus, often seems to lose concentration when she's ahead in matches. Maybe that was the case again today.
It's a shame about Rebecca, but yet another really tough draw for her, she's been very unlucky recently. Kop-Jones beat her in rd1 last week aswell; 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
Team coach Lucie Ahl was very happy with Mel's win "Mel played a solid match today, she will practise and train tomorrow." said Ahl.
Very nice draw for Naomi Musgrave's career best ranking is 239 but that was back in 2000. She hasn't played since early October having been out with a minor injury. Musgrave has done well in Britain this year, she reached the final of the 25K in Felixstowe in July [beating Julia Bone and Amanda Keen] and the semis of the 10K in London in August [before losing to Anna Fitzpatrick in straights]. She's also made two 25K quarters in Japan and France and earlier this year she beat Jane O'Donoghue in 3.
Lucie said ""Naomi has a good chance tomorrow against Musgrave if she can continue being positive and playing her game. Georgie again played well, she has to keep the focus again tomorrow."
Georgie beat De Gubenatis in rd1 last week, 6-3, 6-4.
Ferguson is currently ranked 212, she made the semis last week and also in Melbourne last month. She's done very well on clay this year - 4 quarters in 25Ks and 50Ks, a semi and two 25K finals. Lucie said ""Jane has a tough draw against Sophie but she is playing a lot better and having had a few wins is feeling a lot more confident."
Hopefully at least one of Karen or Natasha will get a lucky loser place. "Emily and Natasha will be put through there paces on the practise court and in training to make sure there ready for next weeks qualifers on Sunday." said Ahl.
"The last tournament is still all to play for, even more so being the last week some girls may be getting tired and ready to go home."
