ATP Basel 2R: Henman v Wawrinka

The 'ugly' Swiss agianst the 'gentleman Brit! Match to commence no later than 2.45pm BST.


I think it going to be tough for Tim. Wawrinka got a nice flowing backhand and an erratic forehand with less bite on the serve! so henman should win comfortably but i think he going to work hard for it!

Mkkreuk will you be around to do live commentary on the match ?

I might/might not be around and anyway I can't get the streaming to work as usual.

Amazingly Wawrinka and Henman have never played before but Wawrinka lists Murray as one of his "bunnies" having beaten him twice, in DC on clay and in Miami this year.

He's ranked 40 [career high 39 reached this month]. In rd1 here he beat Calleri 7-6[6], 6-2. This month he made the Vienna quarters, beating Djokovic 3 and 3 before losing to Ljubicic. In the slams: Aussie Open - rd2 [lost to Nalbandian in 4], RG - rd1 [Nalbandian in straights], Wimbledon - rd3 [Ancic in 4], USO - rd3 [Robredo in straights].

His 2006 highlights are winning ATP Umag and making the semis of Barcelona and Auckland.

Possesses a mighty forehand which has done serious dents in the Murray defence in their matches, when on song he can rip winner after winner off that side. Fast around the court but his serve isn't particularly big. One of his favourite pattern of play is the serve out wide to the ad court follows by a big forehand right down the line off the cross-court return.

I pick Henman in 3 though on current form.

I'll try...i should be doing some essays though...


Eurosport stream doesnt seem to be up though. Hopefully it will be working for tims match. If not, i'll pop in occasionally to give score updates.

oh and henamn in 2 for me. 6-4 6-3.


will be tough against the home crowd though but hes beaten fed here in the final so im sure he can do it.

Tim won the toss and elected to receive.


Wawrinka serving.


0-15. Henman wins the point at the net, umpire calls a 'double bounce' on a wawrinka return.
15-15. Attempted pass by henman goes wide by about a foot.
15-30. Henman tries to pass SW down the line, the swiss gets his racket to the ball but cannot get the ball back in play
30-30. Wawrinka hits a wonderful deep backhand in the middle of a rally and henman cannot return
40-30. Henman steps in trying to hit a winner off the second serve. Goes wide however.
GAME. Service return is long.


Wawrinka leads 1-0*

15-0 ACE out wide.
LOL. first serve fault from time goes up wawrinka's sleeve and gets stuck.
30-0 Forehand from Wawrinka goes wide.
30-15. LONG from henman.
30-30. Unlucky net cord for tim, ball just drifts wide.
30-40. Attempted winner down the line but tim fails to clear the net....break point...
DEUCE. Excellent serve and wawrinkas return goes long
Adv henman. Unreturnable serve
GAME. another unreturnable serve.


Henman produced some brilliant serves there!

15-0. Deep backhand sends henman back and his return is long
30-0. sliced return down the line goes long
30-15. Henman attacks a second serve and then makes a backhand smash look easy.
40-15. Henman nets the return of serve
GAME. Henmans return is long


Wawrinka leads 2-1*

15-0 Brave second serve and the ball gets big on SW, backhand goes long
30-0 tim gets a bit lucky..shoudl have but the ball away twice and SW almost produced a brilliant backhand down the line winner!
40-0. Good serve sends wawrinka out wide and he fails to get the ball back in play.
GAME! Attempted pass from wawrinka is wide
