RE: Nottingham Challenger Wildcards

I believe that Parmar is injured at the moment so that makes it 3 to go between Baker, Mackin, Auckland and Marray.

UBF, have you forgotten there are 4 WC's to be awarded, you write as though there are only 3?

I'm assuming that Goodall will get one if he doesn't make the cut which then makes 3 more to be awarded to 3 of Baker/Mackin/Marray/Auckland. Of course, if Goodall makes it then the wildcards are almost certain to go to Baker, Mackin, Marray and Auckland.

Josh is 2nd ALT now...

Just make him qualify if he doesn't make the cut. If he can't qualify he didn't deserve the wildcard.

Harsh but true...

That's pretty harsh Johnny given his achievements this year, why wouldn't you give him a wildcard ?

Might well go along for the qualies. Anyone else planning to go?

Because if he can qualify for Grand Slams he shouldn't need the help anymore and we can release wild cards to players who need to experience challenger level.

I understand rewarding players for doing well, but we often find qulaifiers beating players on day 1 and 2 because they're used to the surface etc... Josh will get used to surface, qualify, get extra points and someone else has a chance in mina draw!

True and I suppose that given Josh has been struggling for form recently it would give him the opportunity to get some wins under his belt. However given that Josh is first in line rankings-wise for a wildcard, it may come as a bit of a kick in the teeth to him. If you look at the 2007 achievements for the 5 players in line for wcs, Josh's stand out the most.

Also, if he slips up in qualifying it'll be a further dent to his confidence, he's only won two matches since August.

Problem solved...Goodall is in the Main Draw (and Parmar has withdrawn as expected)

More good news is that Galvani has pulled out making Alex the Number 2 seed!

great news...not a problem anymore!

But

...I think josh has proved he has the mental stamina to qualify for events. Qualifying and winning is more beneficial than being given a wc and winning, because you get more points and more confidence. That's why I think we should be careful awarding them on rankings, becasue otherwise the players won't deserve their ranking and be out of their depth.

Look at James Ward in Spain. He's not out of his depth because he's done it the hard way every time, and now he's beginning to reap the rewards!!!

If you get thru qualifying you get 3 points at challenger level, but you've already got 3 games on the clock, the chances of you being fresh enough to win by the semi final stage, when you've already played 6 games in 6 days are pretty slim. So we definitely need to be giving WC's to the players that have the best chance of going deep in the event.

They will all still have plenty of opportunities to qualify for events around the rest of the globe and I would be tempted to be looking towards those players who are putting themselves in the firing line by playing the better events, but no-one can get a decent ranking just by relying on Wc's so dint see that as a problem, great news about Josh, now guaranteed to have 8 players in the tournament plus any qualifiers.

Guaranteed 9 players now, as Mackin has made the MD too.

Boggo, Bloomers, Martin Lee, Goodall, Mackin, 4 WCs + any qualifiers

Aucks is only 2 withdrawals of making the main draw. (see SteveG)

They are dropping like flies, there has been 19 withdrawals so far.  How unusual is that?  Or is that normal?

That's great news about Mackin, hopefully Aucks will make it to. That'll free up another couple of wildcards. I assume that Delgado will get one and maybe Slabba aswell if Aucks gets through directly.

19 withdrawals is extremely rare for a tournament. You only normally see that amount of players dropping out during the Australian hard court swing

The final Alt list on steveg after Mackin scraped in was ...

22. Sirianni, Joseph AUS 311
23. Auckland, James GBR 314
24. Nielsen, Frederik DEN 315
25. Zemlja, Grega SLO 316

... and Sirianni & Nielsen are the top two seeds in qualifying, so that must mean James didn't get in.

Slabba, Bammy (who have drawn each other in QR1), Flan and Rushby are in the qualifying draw. Lee Childs was in Basel and Morgan Phillips is in the Azores again. So if we assume that David S and Colin F aren't playing any more and Jamie B, Jonny M and Aucks are shoe-in for WCs, that leaves three GB players in the 300-700 range unaccounted for:

- Jamie Delgado (not played since DC)

- Matt Smith (not played this month)

- Ross Hutchins (reached R2 in Glasgow this week)

I wonder who'll get the last WC ...

Rob Searle maybe. Isn't he an indoors guy?

The mystery deepens - MJD has just noticed that Aucks is playing doubles in St Patersburg with Wayne Arthurs (no idea why he isn't playing singles qualifying there too - his ranking was easily good enough to get a place in it), so he's not one of the Nottingham WCs.
