Davis Cup: GB v Holland

Tbh, I'm not sure that Boggo would have accepted a place in the DC squad if selected. He has serious issues with Lloyd after the way Lloyd publically slated him during and after the Israel tie last year.

Can't really blame Boggo if that's the case I guess but I would hope he would show a little thicker skin to be honest. In all likelyhood Lloyd is going to be the DC coach for the forseeable so I would hope that him and Alex would find a way to get along. I thought with Lloyd watching him a few times in the US that it was a positive sign (although admittedly the performances and JL's comments after them weren't exactly good bridge builders) plus Andy and Brad were talking him up quite a lot as well. Ah well...no point worrying about it now I guess.

Here's Andy's interview from earlier for anyone who didn't see it.

Lloyd really angered Mackin with his actions last September but they managed to make it up and Lloyd was saying some really encouraging things to Mackin and his then coach Mike Raphael at the Nottingham challenger a month later

Hopefully a similar situation can be found with Boggo but Lloyd has been a lot more damning about Alex in the press...if he wants Alex to commit to DC, he's gonna have to stop mouthing off to the papers about him.

I think Alex really gets on well with Andy, they're good friends and he's found working with Brad really great so hopefully that will help things.

Not sure whether Lloyd and Goodall have made it up yet....it was funny last autumn: Boggo, Bloomers, Goodall and Mackin were all really pissed off with the DC captain and he'd only been in the job 3-4 months

For me Greg should never have been in the squad. If he wanted to play in this tie he needed a few matches under his belt. One match in 5 months isn't good enough preparation for a five set match.

And for that reason he cannot be picked to play a live rubber...even though I like the buy a lot he just cannot justify playing a live rubber....!

I think it is bad that it is not the best player who plays DC but those who get on with the captain John Lloyd best.

Yes - bad, but the way of the world, unfortunately.

It is a shame that Lloyd seems so quick to jump to conclusions about players (and to voice them publicly).

Welcome to the board, Simon, by the way.smile

Thanks Madeline. I thought the LTA had moved on but it looks as if it is still about if your face fits or say the right thing to the right person. I dont think there will ever be transparacy.

Haase, Sluiter, Wassen and Sijsling. Apparently no space for Germeden.

With all due respect I totally disagree....with the tie on fast carpet (I heard it was that) and Greg's experience, if Greg says he is ready and Andy is not I'd play him.  I'd take him at his word that he is ready to go and ready to win at least one match.  I think Tim is good to win two and then both of them will have a full day's rest while our doubles stars do their job on Saturday.

Greg may not have played much, but he has always performed well in Davis Cup and he knows if he is ready to go out and win a point.  I'd much rather chance Greg than a rookie who was out of the top 100 or so.  Greg has been there and knows what it will take, I doubt he will say he is ready unless he is.

Yes, Greg knows how to play for GB. He is far from his best but still dangerous on carpet. Last year in September he showed his determination even on slow clay (saved match point). Believe me Bloomer, Boggo or Alex wouldn't be able to win. Plus it's totaly different to play on tour or at home DC match with full crowd. If Greg said he is prepared, he is ready to win. Greg has never choked in DC.

Greg can beat SLuiter and Haase on fast carpet as you say. Its whether we trust him that he thinks he is fit enough.
