GB F14 - Nottingham - 15K

Qualifying draw:
http://www.tenniseurope.org/PDF/Professional/Mens/2006/Jul-Sep06/Nottingham2/sq.pdf

I'm guessing that 3 of the wildcards have been given to Tom Rushby, Tom Burn and David Brewer. Cox and Evans have been made to go through the qualies, I'm not sure whose got the 4th, maybe 1 of Graeme Dyce, David Rice, Iain Atkinson, Ed Corrie and Tim Hewitt.

Top seed in qualies is Jim May who shouldn't be troubled too much by the players in his section.

Our no 1 U18 [national rankings] Scott Dickson will face the 2nd seeded Austrian Phillip Oswald in rd2 if he beats wildcard James Langford. Matt Lowe [who qualified last week] will probably have to beat Oswald to repeat the feat. Matt could face one of the top U16s Dan Smethurst in rd2.

Kyle Brassington beat Richard Irwin to qualify last week. They're likely to face each other again as Brassington will be favourite to beat 17 year old Burnham Arlidge and then Ross Connolly on recent form.

Rob Searle is the big favourite to qualify in the 4th section. In that section there's a very interesting match between Josh Miller and Lewis Barnes [one of our top U16s and a member of the U14 GB team who won the U14 world team championships a couple of years ago].

Matt Illingworth won his first points last week but he faces a tough task in qualifying as in rd2 he's likely to face 5th seeded Aussie Samuel Groth [wr:899]. Dan Evans is also in that section, he faces unranked South African Ruan Zietsmann in rd1 and if he wins he'll face Ed Allinson in rd2. I'd give Evans a good chance of beating Allinson as although Allinson has the bigger serve, Evans is stronger from the baseline and as Robxon noted last week, Allinson is not the most mobile around the back of the court.

Dan Cox is the 7th seed, he could face Josh Milton in an intriguing rd2 match. Milton will be the favourite to beat fellow Welshman Chris Llewellyn in rd2. If Cox makes it through to rd3, he's likely to play Nikki Peel.

Sean Thornley is seeded 13, he'll probably be the underdog though in rd2 against Adam Barratclough.

I can't believe it that they are making Cox qualify.

Ah well... he will get some practice.

I want to see what Lewis barnes and Marcus Willis does out here. It's time that they start getting the results.

Yeah I couldn't believe it when I saw that Cox hadn't got a wildcard especially after doing so well against Childs last week. From what Robxon wrote, it sounded like a really close match. He should beat Milton and Nikki Peel but they will be tight matches.

Lewis Barnes was rated as a better prospect than Cox a couple of years ago but has since fallen behind. What do you know of Marcus Willis ? I've heard of the name a couple of times before but I can't remember where.

Yep, Barnes hasn't done much during the last year or so.... But he is very young, so I have a lot of hope.

Willis is still 15 and is playing some good tennis at this moment. He won his first ever G5 last month in Latvia. Willis also qualified and reached the quarters of Donnybrook before losing to Josh Milton.

His great moment came earlier this year, when he reached the finals of the doubles in Marcq-en-Baroeul with Evans! That performance, coupled with the singles title, took Evans up to number one in the European U16 circuits.

Although he isn't of the same class as of Evans and Cox, he can be a good player if he plays like he did for the greater part of the year.

Akhazzan isn't playing here.....

I'm really sorry that I can't do much posting about the qualies in detail because I am a bit busy. There were a few very interesting performances there, particularly from Marcus Willis, who was impressive even though he failed to qualify.

Here's the main draw :

Good to see Evans team up with Hilton again. That boy can be an excellent doubles player if we go by results so far. He can learn a lot from Hilton.

I'm absolutely furious at this draw, don't know who to support, both badly need a win. Baker needs to win and go far here as he's got lots to defend from Bolton and Edinburgh in October and not winning any pts in October will send him down to about 348. After this futures, it's all challengers, all of which he will have to qualify for apart from Nottingham where he'll get a wc.

Slabba needs to win to boost confidence and he's defending qf points at Jersey his next tourney.

They've played once before, Jamie won 6-3, 7-6 last autumn.

I think Jamie will win but don't know who to root for.

It would be quite an irony if Sacha's first decent win for a long time was to come at Jamie's expense.

Personally I think jamie's got to hve a good chance of going a bit of a way in this event, so I'm wanting him to win.

More info on the qualies:

21 year old Joseph Dewhurst did well, he beat the 16th seeded Ukranian Varga in rd2 in 3 sets, however, he was thrashed pretty comprehensively by May.

Scott Dickson, our no 1 U18 from the national rankings, won a round but lost in rd2 to the Austrian 2nd seed Phillip Oswald, 7-6, 6-3. However, the 1st set breaker was a mammoth: 11-9. If Dickson had nicked that it could have been a different story.

16 year old Daniel Smethurst had a superb run, beating Dan Cottier in straights in rd1, then Matt Lowe [who qualified last week] in 3 sets in rd2. He came within a few pts of beating Oswald [who's ranked in the 800s] in rd3. A shame as he deserved to qualify.

Another really surprising defeat for Irwin, I wonder what's up with him at the moment. No reason given for his retirement, he seems to be ok now as he's accepted a lucky loser place.

Lewis Barnes beat 17 year old Josh Miller 2 and 3 in rd1, but lost 1 and 3 in rd2 to Dean Jackson who surprisingly beat Rob Searle in rd3. Searle has been a little off-form in the past couple of weeks, he'll probably do better once the indoor GB futures start, his game is better suited for fast courts.

Dan Evans thrashed his rd1 opponent 1 and 0 but then lost 6-4, 6-4 to Ed Allinson in rd2 which was a little surprising. Allinson's conqueror Groth also beat Matt Illingworth [who got his 1st ranking pts last week] in rd2 6-3, 7-5.

19 year old Matt Taylor from Cambridgeshire had some great results to qualify, beating Naim Lalji [who has been in the top 1000] in rd2. Taylor gave last week's eventual finalist Junaid his closest match before the final, it can't be long before Taylor gets his 1st ranking pts.

Josh Milton won the battle of the Welsh juniors over Chris Llewellyn 6-1, 6-4 but was dispatched in straights in rd2 by Dan Cox, 6-3, 6-3. Marcus Willis had some really great wins, beating Charlie Crisp 7-6, 7-6 in rd1 and then big serving Nikki Peel 6-4, 6-2 in rd2. His match against Cox was really close from the looks of things, Dan just edged through.

Sean Thornley had a great rd2 win beating the experienced Adam Barratclough in 3 sets.

Don't bash the Slabba

He's had some great results this year beating a top 300 player 6-2, 6-1 and several top 600 players. He's just been unlucky several times with bad draws and also he's lost a lot of close 3 setters. He's trying to develop more consistency in his game, when on fire he can outhit a lot of players at this level but when slightly misfiring he's working on getting a plan B.

Hopefully Tom Rushby can come through that one and continue his march up the rankings. If he reaches the quarters this week, he'll be very close to the top 600. It looks like after that close 1st set he upped his level in the 2nd, hopefully he can steamroller through the 3rd set aswell.

Great win for David Brewer, unfortunately if looks as if he'll come up against the no 1 seed in rd2

It's good to see Matt Smith making a comeback from injury. Flanagan was a tricky draw for him as he's caused Matt quite a few problems in previous matches, he's beaten him twice in straight sets this year. It looks like he's starting to take control of that one.

Tom Burn has an excellent draw, I'm sure he'll fancy his chances in rd2- either an out-of-form Smith or Flanagan.

Jonny Marray should hopefully get through to the quarters but then he's likely to have a really difficult match against Junaid.

If Baker gets past Slabba, Bamford could be a tricky rd2 match for him, he's beaten Jamie in the past and then in the quarters he'd be likely to play Baccanello who's probably the dark horse for this title having won several futures this year and been in the top 150 in the past. He's a lot better than 391, he's only ranked that low due to injury, in the past he's made challenger finals.

The latest from Nottingham:

Matt Smith came back and edged a tight 3rd set to win 7-5, 2-6, 6-4

Jim May outhit Dan Cox and won 6-1, 6-2

Rushby lost a mammoth 3rd set 11-9 in the tiebreak.
Final score: Groth bt Rushby 7-6, 1-6, 7-6[9]
The scorelines of most of Rushby's matches appear quite bizarre with massive fluctuations in form from one set to another, there never seems to be a dull match with him. He must be a very interesting player to watch
