Excerpts:

Summarise your tennis year so far.
“I feel like I’ve played some good tennis this year at times. I had some decent weeks at the start of the year. I was struggling towards the end of last year - I had a lot of problems with my spine so I trained pretty hard to get going again for the start of 2006. I had a lot of treatment on it and have done a lot of yoga which has helped. Then I took a period out to get ready for the grass season which was a big target for me. I wanted to be fit for Wimbledon and the LTA wildcard play-offs and I played well on grass this year.”

You lost two five-set matches in GB’s last tie in Eastbourne against Israel. How was that weekend for you on reflection?
“Funnily enough, I watched my singles match for the first time last night because there were a couple of things I wanted to look at. I was obviously completely devastated that I lost those two matches, but I was proud of the way I went about playing those matches.”

You’re 29. Where do you see your game and career right now?
“I still see lots of players having their best years later on – there are loads of players around who are doing well in their late 20s and early 30s, especially in doubles. I feel like I’ve got some good years left and, to be honest, in terms of fitness I feel better now than I did three years ago.”

Most embarrassing moment on court?
“I remember playing at Wimbledon for the first time as a junior and I was so nervous that I went on court in my trainers – not my tennis shoes. We did the coin toss at the net and I still had them on and then I walked to the back of the court to start the warm-up and the umpire had to tell me to change my shoes.”
