So we all know that Andy is now the top teenager on the singles rankings but how did he get there? I have put together a graph showing the battle for the crown of top teenager over the past few of years. I can't guarentee that it is an exhaustive list but I'm pretty sure I have got the main players.
Nadal hit the big two-oh at the start of June this year and Monfils took over, then for one week it was Novak Djokovic but Andy's run of 11 wins in 3 weeks has taken him past both of those players and into the top twenty.
The last graph was maybe lacking a bit so I have replaced it with one that goes to 150 rather than 100. That allows me to me two include the next two of the 'current teenagers' in the rankings.
The names in the legend are ordered from oldest at the top to youngest at the bottom. If you examine the graph closely this becomes clear. Only the last five are still teenagers, the next to turn 20 will be Monfils on the 1st of September.
Looking at the graph Nadal's performance is exceptional but as far as it currently goes Andy's line compares favourably with everyone else on that list.
I have had to update the graph as Andy has lost his crown to Novack Djokovic.
In other news Korolev and Del Potro have continued their progress up the rankings and Sam Querrey makes his first appearance on the list of top teens.
Does anyone want to guess who will be next to break onto the list?
The contenders are Ernests Gulbis who has reached the quarter finals in St Petersberg. Mischa Zverev the old school serve-volleyer who reahed the quarter final of Bankok but hasn't done much since. And Marin Cilic whose claims to fame are reaching the semi final of Gstaad and ending Andy Murray's junior career.
(btw the eagle eyed may notice that Zverv is already on the list, that's a typo, he has to break into the top 140 for his graph to be included)
I think it's most likely that Zverev is next to make the graph.
There's also Ukraine's Dolgopolov, who's won 5 futures this year and still yet to turn 18. And Boggo-killer, Lukas Lacko, is still only 18, he might well make the top 100 soon. Japan have a 16-year-old, Kei Nishikori, who's doing well, he could make the graph in a year or so.
Other top teenagers are Giraldo, Fognini and the Dutch trio of Haase, de Bakker & Sijsling.
nishikori is highly rated indeed. he is one of img's "elite 12".
watch out for jonathan eysseric. he started the year ranked around 380 in juniors. he should be the junior world number one next year since de bakker and lojda retire from juniors this year and klizan defends too much in roland garros, where as eysseric's roland garros points aren't included. and eysseric is a brilliant doubles player. three futures doubles titles already.
he took saulnier to three sets on indoors this week and jonathan is a clay expert. i expect big things from him next year.
Kei Nishikori is getting better and better - Last month he won a Futures after qualifying for it in Mexico. He attempted qualies of a 50K+H Challenger in Guayaquil and got through with being much troubled. He defeated a top 400 player in the first round of the main draw in a three setter.
He will gain 9 points and will move up to around 610 in the rankings from his present position of 691.
And all this at the age of 16!!!!
If he plays like this, he could create some serious fuss in tennis, especially on clay, in two years time.
I can't find where Indiana posted his thread, only two weeks ago or so, bemoaning the lack of any British teenagers in the Men's top 1000 ATP ranking. Which had been true for rather a long time.
And then, hey presto, Joel Cannell careered through, into the top 1000, barely a day or two later.
And then Jay Clarke did the same, a week or so after that.
Like red buses.....
So well done, Indy !
And if any other teenager feels like giving Indy a hat-trick, you're be very welcome.
Pretty sure it's in the 'Junior Rankings' thread when you were wondering when any of the highly ranked teenage boys would play enough adult to pass 1000 in seniors...
