This cannot be a long - term project: there are too mant tournaments going on down here, and the number of points needed to move up or down a place is relatively small, so to do it properly, it should be stretching down to where Bloomers is. So I'll give it a go until the end of the US Open. Greg will probably be giving his career the same length of time.
Greg, as we've said in Tim's thread, has dropped over 50 ranking places to 127th. This is down to losing 225 points from his semi- final appearance at the Tennis Masters Series Canada last year.
Worse, his first opportunity to regain some points fizzled out against Youzhny, yesterday, and he has to sit out the week watching players try to overtake.
His biggest threat is Alejandro Falla, who's qualified for Toronto, and so will be adding big numbers if he does advance. Robert Kendrick's also qualified for Toronto and needs to reach the third round to overtake. Rajeev Ram needs to reach the semis. The assorted Canadian Wildcards need to reach the final.
Then we're looking at Mello, who needs to reach the semis in Joinville, where he's #1 seed; Lu, who needs a semis place in Binghampton, Bozoljac and Minar, who both need semis places in San Marino, Hartfield (F, San Marino), Zib or Luczac (W, Binghampton), Bolelli, Marin or Economides (W, San Marino).
In total, 10 can overtake, taking Greg to a worst- case 137th.
Hopefully, we only really need to worry about Falla, Kendrick, Mello and Lu.
Boggo, has been sitting in the 140s for the last couple of months.
His biggest threat is Kendrick, in Toronto, who just needs to reach R2.
Then we have Luczak (QF, Binghampton), Bolelli (QF, San Marino), Delic (SF, Binghampton), Cipolla (SF, Vigo), Marin and Economides (SF, San Marino), Hernandez and Navarro- Pastor (F, Vigo).
there may be others ranked below 160, including, of course, Ram and the Canadian Wildcards.
i think it will be a big task to keep this one going as you say, alex wont be playign anywhere untill graz, austria, but i dont expect much from him there, more of a run out i think to see if he is fit ahead of the usoq.
i assume greg made the md at uso, hopefully a good run there can hlep him? where di he get last year.

He's defending a second round in Cincy (35 points) and a first round exit at the USO (5), so there's a chance to add some good points there.
Otherwise, he really needs to get some quarter- finals at normal ATP tournaments, especially as he's unlikely to get direct entry to Paris or Madrid, and so will be able to count more tournaments than just the five.
if greg ends the year outside the top 100 can we see him continuing into 2007?? if his body just wont let him compete what can he really do?
i remember last year he played challengers to try and get the no 1 spot, but i cant see him being prepared to do that full time as such? i dont believe he needs the money and lets face it, he's not going to make a serious impact in the slams like andre manages occasionaly.
am sure he could get a cushy tv job anyhow.

Realistically I can't see Greg going on unless he turns things round in the next 6 weeks. He needs some big points from Cincinatti, New Haven, US Open and Beijing. If he doesn't he won't be getting direct acceptances to anymore ATP events.
Well his retirement is imminent unfortunately Unless he is confident of turning things around, i think this year will be his last. i feel the hip injury has affected him quite bad. he played well in the rome masters till he went to queens and was struggling to be fit. i felt his match against safin was a good performance by his standards because he was still recovering from the injury.
Mixed results on Wednesday: The pins were all working too well in Canada, they didn't make it over to Europe.
For Greg, things are looking up: Mello went out in Joinville.
For Boggo, though, the threats are breathing down his neck: Economides is enjoying a good run in San Marino, and is now just one point behind. If he makes the semis today, Boggo's down to 142nd. Meanwhile Hernandez has already made the semis in Vigo. If he reaches the final, then Boggo's down to where he started the week, in 143rd.
Remember to keep some pins out in Europe!
I'm going to be away for a week now (hillwalking in the Pyrenees) - Would someone keep an eye on this thread, please.
