Qualifying draw is finally available - not too many British seeds here. They have already played the first two rounds and there are 3 guaranteed British qualifiers:
Qual Round 3:
Charroin vs Aniola Ken Skupski vs Matt Illingworth Groth vs McGahon La Porte vs Simon Ferguson Corkery vs Chris Lllewellyn Ross Connolly vs Matt Lott Sletting-Johnsen vs Ed Allinson Iain Atkinson vs Dan Cottier
Before this tournament, Alan Mackin did a short interview with the local paper:
Alan Mackin wants to continue softening the blow of Davis Cup disappointment next week on Ilkley's grass courts.
The 24-year-old player from Paisley, who started the resurgence of Scottish tennis that has been continued by Andy Murray, Colin Fleming and Jamie Murray, was in the Great Britain team beaten 3-2 by Israel last weekend at Eastbourne.
Mackin, who defeated Dekel Valtzer 6-2, 6-1 in the dead rubber, said: "I played a good match and the team were unlucky to lose.
"Jamie Delgado was unfortunate in the fourth rubber and if he had won I would have been playing the deciding match. continued...
"The guy I was playing against was not a bad player but I have been playing good tennis recently and did well to beat him.
"I have been doing well on grass recently and I have a few tournaments coming up that I want to focus on and hopefully perform well in."
Mackin, who is confident of being involved in Britain's squad for their Europe/ Africa Zone One relegation tie in the Ukraine in the autumn, has recently started working with a new coach in Michael Raphael.
The Scot said: "He also coaches Jamie Delgado and Alex Bogdanovich and we've been working on keeping me playing an aggressive style of tennis."
Alan Mackin (Gbr) bt Andrew Kennaugh (Gbr) 4-6 6-0 6-2
Tough draw for Kennaugh......only positive is that at least a Scot beat him
Seriously though Kennaugh in time should hopefully be stepping up to at least compete with the main GB top players.....hopefully this year will be of great expierience for him and then next year make a big leap in results and the rankings.
Hey Everyone! I'm back! I'm sure you've missed all my interesting comments!! Quite a lot of British activity at Ilkley...nice to see! Yeah..shame about the Kennaugh cos I rate him loads. I agree, this is his year to make an impression and I really think he can do it! Come on Andy! You could make British tennis great again and bring a bit of class back to it!
Yeah, Andy Kennaugh does have a lot of potential, he's been a little unlucky with draws lately. Yesterday's match looks like it was similar to when he played Mackin in Feb in the GB 1 satellite - Andy kept with Mackin for the 1st set and nicked it but then Mackin's extra power and speed from the baseline proved too much in the next two.
Am amazed that Kalaitzis [trains at Sutton with Slabinsky, Seator and Allinson] beat Hutchins so easily given Ross' recent results on grass ! That was a shock result. I thought that this year's Queens champion Iain Atkinson would beat Ross Connolly aswell, Connolly has a great sliced serve out wide which would be effective on grass but he's only won a few matches this year so I was very surprised he won in straights.
Matt Smith result was a shocker, Maes got given a real mashing by Mackin in Nottingham last week so I thought he'd present little problems for Matt. After from a couple of futures this year where he's made the semis [GB F6 in April and Ireland F1 in june], Matt has struggled to replicate his 2005 form this year and I fear his ranking is going to take a real hammering come the autumn when he has lots to defend.
Good to see Jonny Marray getting wins on the grass. This is the first time he's ever really made an impact in the post-Wimbledon grass tournaments
I predict quarters of Goodall v Ghedin, Mackin v Corkery, Marray v Childs and Ouanna v Maes. Stolt could cause Josh a few problems with his big serve but I can't see beyond a straight sets win for Josh in this one, before this tournament Stolt hadn't won a main draw match since mid-June. Charroin has lost to Brits Fleming and David Rice this month on grass so he shouldn't present an overly difficult task for Mackin. Groth lost 1 and 4 to Fleming in Nottingham challenger qualies last week and so Marray's similar net-rushing style should prove effective.
P Stolt [USA] bt J Goodall [GB][1] 6-3, 3-6, 7-6[5]
R Ghedin [It][8] bt E Allinson [GB] 6-3, 6-3
A Mackin [GB][3] bt O Charroin [Fr] 6-1, 6-2
L Childs [GB][4] bt R Connolly [GB] 7-6[3], 7-6[1]
J Maes [Fr] bt O Kalaitzis [GB] 7-5, 6-4
Goodall losing is a massive upset, I can't quite believe that result. The 3 set king falls for the first time since June. Stolt hasn't won two main draw matches in a row since April.
Mackin will be absolutely delighted, emphatic win for him today and the path has been cleared for him to reach the final.
Kalaitzis did well to push Maes fairly close given their ranking difference
But, it's not been a great day for the Brits so far, hopefully Jonny Marray and Tom Rushby can improve things [they're on court at the moment].
Haha, I've just been reading the BBC site and to compound Matt Smith and Olivier Kalaitzis' misery at losing, the Beeb guys think they've lost to a girl:
