Qualifying rd1:

A Hawkins [GB] v O Kirpicheva [Rus]

N Lee [GB] v M Kiszczynska [Pol][8]

Anna Hawkins has the best chance of progressing through to rd2, her opponent is ranked just over 200 places higher - 1038. However, the players ranked above 1000 all have a similar number of points and the difference in standard between them isn't all that great.

Nadia has a tough match, her opponent is ranked over 400 places higher at 558. The Pole qualified for a 25K in Belgium last week, losing in rd1.

Sarah retired in QR2 at $50k Lexington last week so it might be something to do with that.

That's a fantastic win for Amanda against such an in-form player. Argeri is ranked 172 and reached a 25K quarter-final in Italy last week and the week before she won a 25K in Brazil.

Amanda was featured in the latest British tennis magazine, talking about how a year away from the game had renewed her hunger for success and how she feels she's playing a lot more naturally now, not trying to play more like the power hitters and instead trying to play her own game. She decided to take a break from tennis after her Wimbledon 2005 loss in rd1 where she missed several matchpoints and that basically knocked the stuffing out of her.

Sarah Coles' loss was a big shame as her opponent was ranked nearly 300 palces lower and if she'd won she would have had a great chance of making the quarters as a wc or a qualifier awaited her in rd2.

Claire Peteran, Jane O'Donaghue and Rebecca Llewellyn have been playing today.

Claire has a Polish qualifier ranked over 100 places lower at 558. The 18 year old Pole is a clay-court specialist and her best result in 2006 has been reaching a 10K semi in Rome in March.

Jane has the 5th seeded Argentine Maria Garcia ranked 269, about 70 places higher than Jane. Garcia has been in great form, reaching a 25K final at the end of June and making the semis of a 25K in Brazil a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully Jane can produce some of the great form which saw her make the Frinton semis a couple of weeks ago.

Rebecca has the best draw, up against a French lucky loser ranked over 200 places lower in rd1. As long as Rebecca's been able to get in some good practise time on the courts, she should be ok and could face Claire in rd2.

i think she tried to do it 6-2 2-6 6-2 this time but thankfully amanda was too good!
