Jamie Murray has a wild card into a pretty weak looking qualifying draw and is seeded 3 despite his ranking of 858. Everyone else in his qualifying section are unranked Americans or one Aussie ranked 1172. If he doesn't qualify he should be shot!
Good start for Jamie he beat the force that is Hunter Gallaway with a double breadstick. As expected he will face world number 1172 in the final qualifying round.
The main draw is out and Richard Bloomfield is the 2nd seed!!!
Both Richard and Jamie will play qualifiers in the first round. Richard looks to have a really good draw. Jamie isn't so lucky he will probably meet 3rd seed Rajeev Ram if he can beat his qualifier.
Bloomers first round match against Tobias Clemens of Germany is 4th on Stadium court today, stated as not before 3.30 local time in Aptos.
Jamie Murray plays doubles with Mirko Pehar of USA and they are seeded 2. They play first on COurt 1 starting at 11 local time against American wildcards Lepler and Klay. SHould be a banker.
Bloomers in doubles main draw as well playing with Rob Smeets of Australia. On paper they have a winnable first round match vs Pade and Coupe of USA. Would face top seeds Ratitawana brothers of Thailand if they hit the second round!
Info on Clemens (Bloomers R1 opponent)
Aged 26. Ranked 525 with a high of 430 in February this year. Looks like he had a good start to the year reaching the final of USA F1 and winning Britain F5 doubles title, but done little since. Bloomers will be hot favourite.
Jamie Baker has drawn qualifier Robert Yim of USA in Round 1.
Yim is currently ranked 865 with a high of 444 in August 2004. He won USA F11 this year about two months ago but has done little else of particular note. On paper Jamie Baker should outclass him! We will see!
Qualifier surprises No. 2 seed on opening day APTOS, Calif. – Former UCLA standout Tobias Clemens, ranked No. 525 in the world, rode the momentum of strong play in the qualifying tournament to upset second-seeded Richard Bloomfield of Great Britain 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on opening day of the $75,000 Comerica Challenger. Bloomfield, ranked No. 203, was coming off a first-round victory at Wimbledon, where the wildcard entry defeated Carlos Berlocq. The 22-year-old from Norwich, England, was eliminated by Tommy Haas in Wimbledon’s second round.
Plenty of motivation for Great Britain’s Baker APTOS, Calif. – First, there’s the 2006 U.S. Open that is on Jamie Baker’s mind. The 19-year-old from Nottingham, England, also wouldn’t mind winning a few more rounds at the $75,000 Comerica Challenger so he could enjoy the Seascape Sports Club a bit longer. “It’s extra motivation to stay one or two more days,’’ Baker said. “I love this place.’’ Baker opened his U.S. tour with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Robert Yim on Tuesday. Baker will be playing in six American tournaments, including the U.S. Open qualifying tournament next month, if he can move up from his No. 289 world ranking. In order to play in the U.S. Open qualifying tournament, a player needs to be ranked about No. 240 in the world. That ranking is within Baker’s reach and could be accomplished as early as Sunday should he put together a string of victories this week. Once in the U.S. Open qualifying tournament, a player needs to win three matches in order to advance to the main draw. Baker, who turns 20 next month, received a wildcard into the 2006 Wimbledon main draw. He dropped a tough four-set loss to Andreas Seppi in the first round, learning several lessons. “I’m trying to get fitter,’’ Baker said. “The first experience playing in Grand Slam takes a lot of energy out of you. I know I’ve got that kind of match in me.’’ In his quest for a berth in the U.S. Open qualifying tournament, Baker will continue his U.S. swing at Challenger tournaments in Lexington, Ky., and Vancouver. “I have a short space of time to do it,’’ Baker said. “I need to go out and get after the ball.’’ The 20th annual Comerica Challenger along the Pacific Ocean near Monterey has been a springboard for other talented players, including 2005 champ Andy Murray of Dunblane, Scotland. Murray entered the 2005 Comerica Challenger ranked No. 205 and has risen to No. 35 in the world. Baker’s second-round match will prove to be a measuring stick of how he can expect to fare on the Challenger circuit in the United States. His second-round match Thursday is against third-seeded Rajeev Ram, who lost to Murray in the Comerica final last year, 6-4, 6-3. Ram has received a wildcard into the U.S. Open the past two years.
