Quarter-final: T Craciun [Rom][1] bt M Phillips [GB] 6-1, 4-6, 6-1
A shame that Morgan wasn't able to continue the form he showed in set 2 but still an excellent performance against a guy ranked over 300 places higher [Craciun is ranked 325 and is one of the on-form players this year in futures having won 4 titles in 2006 - 3 in the past few weeks plus 2 semis and a runners-up spot]. Morgan's showing now that he can really compete with these guys and that he can beat them so hopefully it won't be long before his ranking is up into the low 300s. It just shows what wonders a futures title does for your confidence !
The rd1 win over the 5th seed was fantastic, at the moment Morgan's in a different class to guys ranked in the mid 500s - it looks like he was barely troubled in that match.
Unfortunately he didn't have much success in doubles this week: Morgan and Spina lost in rd1 to a Canadian/Romanian combination, 7-6[5], 2-6, 6-4
Morgan's currently ranked 638 and his points gained from this week will take him up to approx 612. He'll then need 2 more ranking points to make the top 600 [equivalent of reaching a futures quarter-final]. He needs 9 more points to make the top 550, equivalent of reaching a 10K final.
