Week 42 - WTA500 - Ningbo, China - Hard

Sod's Law. But, Liv and Maia have drawn each other in round one here in the WTA500 event. Maia is playing with Kozyreva.

Could go a long way to determining who gets top British spot.

I wonder how much GB #1 concerns them.

Certainly for now, the WTA race is no doubt Liv's main focus. Errani & Paolini lost their Wuhan SF, having been 9-4 up in the MTB and having 6 MPs in all before losing it 12-10, leaving them still just 31 points ahead of Liv & Tereza in race #9 position.. Errani & Paolini are in Ningbo as well and face the top seeds, Bucsa & Melichar in R1.

I'm sure getting to the tour finals will be much more on Livs mind. The match starts shortly.

Well, Maia + won 4 and 5, looked at one stage as if it would go to a MTB, but Maia and partner came back from 1-4 down to take the second.

I think Liv stays top for now, but more importantly that really doesn't help their Tour Finals efforts, still in it but are running out of room. Not sure if the Hong Kong and Chennai events count as they run right up to IW, so presumably just next week and Tokyo specifically to try and have one big week and get some points.

But this really damages them.

Actually L & T led by a break in the first set and by 4-0 in the second, but some good play by M & M and errors by L & T proved decisive.
With Errani and Paolini facing the top seeds this week should have given them a good chance of reclaiming the spot in the race, but as JonH says, the chance appears to be over now.
Maia closes to 140 points behind Liv in the live rankings.

The last counting tournaments are the ones starting two weeks before the finals, so next week is the last chance.

Got to hope that the Italian pair lose round one and then they Liv and Tereza have a big week in, presumably, Tokyo.

For now, hope Maia and partner take advantage and get a win or two more here!

Errani & Paolini lost to the top seeds, Bucsa & Melichar in straight sets.

So the race battle for #9 ( effectively #8 for the WTA Finals ) is showing as :

9. Errani & Paolini - 2417 points - lost in Ningbo R1
10. Nicholls & Mihalikova - 2376 - lost in Ningbo R1
11. Eikeri & Gleason - 2278 - in Ningbo QF
12. Routliffe & Sumjiadi - 2273 - in Ningbo QF
13. Aoyama & Liang - 2220 - lost in Ningbo R1

Presumably all will go in Tokyo next week, as opposed

to the Chinese event?

Yes, there are entered for Tokyo, plus Dabrowski/Stefanini and Bucsa/Mellichar-Martinez who are already qualified and a few other top players.

Hopefully Liv+ at least get a decent R1 draw. Although tbf this week's one vs Maia+ looked relatively decent.
