European Athletics Champs - Birmingham

It is the first time GB has hosted the European Champs for a very long time and no suprise it has impacted on the Commonwealth Games entries, being so close - starts next week .

I went to Barcelona back in 2010 and it was really enjoyable.

I plan to go to Birmingham, but they dont make it easy.

There are morning and evening sessions, which mean with a 2hr drive going via morning rush hour or getting home  at 1am as the event finishes at 10pm in the evening.

In addition, tickets can be quite expensive and there is no local parking(not even in the park behind the stadium). Park and ride at Walsall or park & walk 2 miles away(35 min walk).

I cannot get a train back on a night session due to the late finish.

Any thoughts on parking locally?

Having gone to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 4 years ago I just parked on a street 10-15 minutes away if I remember correctly. The streets closer than that will have clear signage saying you can't park there and traffic wardens patrolling. Just try and get there early as possible.

If you wanted to use them though the transport options I heard these ran very, very well even coming out of the stadium barely any waiting time.

Hopefully the same this time.

Ps I believe this is the first EVER time we gave hosted, crazy!

I also went to the commonwealth games. They did park and ride at jaguar Land rover, 20 minute bus ride . another alternative might bre to take the car to a station carpark on the perry barr train line and walk from PB Station, might be 20 minutes.

 Think i will try parking 15 mins away as Wolf says. The two nearest stations - Perry Bar and Hamstead are similar walks and have no dedicated car park

They closed all the roads close to the stadium for access.
I did find somewhere round the back and a 15 min walk eventually..
Not been for about 10 years, stadium is much improved. Lots going on, not sure what to follow.

Stadium was only a third full. The ticket prices in the top categories were far too expensive.

Good to see Amy Hunt claim her first senior international title in the 100m yesterday to give GB its first gold, but how disappointing that the formal medal presentation ceremony appears to have been dispensed with, replaced by some anonymous woman official rushing up to the medal-winner & hanging it round his/her neck!  furious    There's always something quite stirring to see the Union Flag rise to the top of the middle flagpole to the strains of "God save the King", for me anyway.

Paul:  I was staggered to see the number of empty seats in the stadium yesterday evening.  Not an encouraging sight!  no

 They did the same re medals at the last World Championships as well. 

Part of me thinks they should de couple these types of events from nations anyway, make them selected on world rankings largely with a few wildcards, so a nation could have maybe half a dozen entries of merited. So its truly the best in Europe Or the World and not just two or three max from a nation. Maybe thats just me!

Thanks Christine, I imagined there would be something much more formal.

At the Tokyo World Athletics last year there were also traditional medal ceremonies on the 'medal plaza' next to the  Olympic Stadium the day after the athletes' finals. This was apparently part of a fans zone so open to the public.
