The World Cup

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, every bit as corrupt as "Septic Bladder".  furious

My good mate, David Conn, wrote this excellent investigative book into fifa which is worth a read if the corruption of fifa interests anyone

It's not the corruption that bothers me per se, it is the fact that it is so blatant and apparently completely without remorse or consequence.

(... and not just FIFA in the world right now)

Not at all playing down the FIFA / Infantino issues but would it maybe be better to have a different title for this thread like say "FIFA Issues" so then leaving room for say a "FIFA World Cup 2026" thread to concentrate on the football rather than folk start adding that on here? There is already some preliminary competition chat in the General Football thread.

Not saying thst non football issues should not be raised during the course of a FIFA World Cup 2026 thread, indeed it may prove to be appropriate to raise some as the competition goes along, but I just think that might be a clearer initial distinction.

I think that is a good suggestion!

If anyone likes predicting the winner and rest of the bracket, the Guardian have this great tool!

I have Scotland losing to Mexico last 32. And England losing to Mexico last 16

With Argentina beating France in the final.

OMG! I also have Argentina beating France in the final and Brazil beating Uruguay for 3rd place, but England losing to Portugal and Scotland losing to Croatia.

I confidently predict that I shall lose interest once England goes out & I certainly shan't waste time watching the final (unless, of course, England unexpectedly reaches it!).

Thanks Jon. And I see that the threads have now been merged, which wasn't exactly what I was thinking of. But hey ho I guess it's no biggie.

Already 2 votes for Scotland getiing out of a World Cup Finals Group  biggrin

I think they will get out - theyll beat Haiti, probably lose the other 2 but 3 points should be fine. England I think will get 7 points in our pool. Croatia a draw. Ghana may be a draw, but think we will sneak it. I have England meeting Ivory Coast last 32 bit Mexico being the bete noir.

Yeah, not quite the plan! However, i suspect the thread will become just about the football. And there will be a lot of that.

I was thinking earlier, I dont feel at all World Cup feverish. Suspect thats because a) Im not a teenager anymore and b) its hard to see how it will mean much before the knockout stages

Although Im sure that wlll change - I felt like this pre Qatar (wrong time of the year was my view and in a desert country etc) - I ended up enjoying the last one a lot and hope that will come to pass this year as well!

It was never my intention to start a thread devoted solely to the corruption that's clearly rife within FIFA, but I was so incensed after reading Martyn Ziegler's article that I couldn't be arsed to take a more measured view, so when I saw your earlier comments, I merged it into Jon's neutral theme.

Off topic, about to watch The Damned United on BBC1, largely because I have a lot of time for Michael Sheen & both Don Revie & Cloughie hailed from my home town rather than because I have any fondness for The Dirties.
