Could be a very important week for Fran re securing French Open MD direct entry.

Live rankings indicate that she will be WR 100 tomorrow with the following Monday being the relevant date for the entry list.

Fran has nothing to drop next week ( with an 18th counter of 1 point so any win is profit ) but I don't yet know about entries or points drops from these around her in the rankings. Or who might have a protected ranking stored up.

Looking at Open Era  it doesn't like like many players just above or below her have a large number of points to come off on 13th.  Of those above her Gracheva is definitely out with an ACL injury, the older Kudermetova hasn't played this year has she? Who knows re Vondrousova, not played since January, Boisson, not played since last October.  There will be a few others injured I expect too. There are 6 players below her within 25 points including Vecic and Badosa so I think she may need to win one match as some will possibly overtake her otherwise.

Yay, well done to Fran on.getting the better of that.

I see she broke again to serve for the match at *5-4. Broken then to 30 and was initially 0-3* down in the TB but winning 7 of the last 8 points saw her home.

As far as I can see it is loss of form, although she did miss the odd three or four weeks during the last year. Must have dropped a lot of points from the previous year. Her biggest counters are just 30 points, and I see that she had more than one of 30, 60 and 65 as well as a 195 from the previous year.

I think Elina had mono that impacted her just as her results were taking off

Yes, but WHY the loss of form?

After all, loss of form is just circular

I'm sure I read that she'd been diagnosed with mono (as well as having some wrist/shoulder injury?)

And that, over a lot of months, she'd tried to battle through it, just feeling utterly exhausted, as you do with mono, going from bad to worse

Isn't Avanesyan the Russian that switched to Armenia a while back?

Yep. Her parents were from a region of Azerbaijan that has a significant Armenian population and is/was contested between the two countries. They moved to Russia in 1992 due to the Azeri-Armenian war (according to Wikipedia). So one of the more legitimate switches.
