US College chat 2025/26

A new thread for a new season. This will be the first season under the House settlement agreement that allows for revenue sharing with athletes -though tennis as a non-revenue Olympic sport is not likely to see much of that - and roster limits of 10 players. With the new landscape athletics departments have been reviewing their sport portfolio and several smaller tennis programs have been shut down.
The transfer portal has been very active with players seeking the best NIL deals they can get or for better playing opportunities, including several British men and women.

Wake Forest men will look to defend their title and near perfect season, but with only 3 of last year's regular 6 returning - Suresh, Robertson and Pow - and the rest of the team having little collegiate playing experience that may be more challenging this year. TCU men embark on their first season in over a decade without British interest on their roster.

The autumn semester will again focus on individual competition with team play in the spring. There's no change as far as I'm aware to the qualification to the individual NCAAs. Places will be won at the All Americans, Regionals, sectionals and conference masters.

The main dates this year
20 - 28 September All-Americans (Men Tulsa, Women Cary)
Mid October Regionals
6 - 9 Nov Sectionals
6 - 9 Nov Conference Masters (Barnes TC, San Diego)
18 - 23 Nov NCAA individual singles and doubles championships, USTA National Campus, Lake Nona, Florida

Early Feb ITA Team Indoor Championships
14 - 17 May NCAA Team Championships, Athens, Georgia

The pre season rankings don't make great reading from a British perspective. I'm not sure how the singles rankings are worked out - they're supposed to be the returning players from the season end top 125 with the remainder filled by WTN, but they don't look like that especially on the women's side.

Ollie Tarvet has said he is not returning until January so isn't submitted for the pre season rankings.

Men
38 Roan Jones (UNC)
55 Alex Okonkwo (Ohio State)
92 Luca Pow (Wake Forest)
103 Will Jansen (Georgia)
114 Charlie Robertson (Wake Forest)

Women
55 Gabia Paskauskas (Florida)
62 Immi Haddad (USC)
106 Savannah Dada-Mascoll (App State)

20 Blaydes/Blaydes (Auburn)
30 Jansen/Azkara (Georgia)

44 Okonkwo/Bernard (Ohio State)

The All American Championships, the first of the NCAA Individual championships qualifying events and the most prestigious individuals competition after the NCAAs, starts tomorrow. All singles quarter finalists and the consolation draw finalists will qualify for the NCAAs. The 4 doubles semi-finalists will also qualify.

The singles draws are a 64 player main draw, a 64 qualifying draw and a 160 player pre-qualifying draw. Most of our players are in pre-qualifying. The mens event is in Tulsa, OK and the women's in Cary, NC as they have been for many years.

Last year Ollie Tarvet won singles and doubles and we had other qualifiers for the NCAAs. For us to have any qualifiers for the NCAAs here, somebody will need to make a big step up.
Gabia's and Immi's rankings are largely down to the successful runs from pre-qualifying they had here last year. Can they repeat that this year or can somebody in PQ make similar runs?

The pre-qualifying draws are out and participating are
[3] Derrick Chen (Georgia), Anthony Wright (UNC), Miles Groom (Dartmouth), Henry Jefferson (Florida), Matt Rankin (Kentucky), Luc Koenig (Baylor), Freddy Blaydes (Auburn), Louis Bowden (Baylor)
Anthony and Miles meet in the opening round

Kristina Paskauskas (Alabama), Jasmine Conway (NC State), Millie Bissett (Florida State), Eva Shaw ( Florida State), [21+]Daniela Piani (South Carolina), Jaquelyn Ogunwale (Miami), Isabelle Lacy (Virginia)
Jaquelyn and Isabelle could meet in the 2nd round
Talia Neilsen-Gatenby (Clemson) was listed in pre-qualifying but doesn't appear in the draw. There are plenty of players in PQ with a higher WTN so I don't think she's been moved to qualifying but we'll see.

Unfortunately they've taken the selection sheets down, but from memory, the participants in the later draws are
Main draw: Roan Jones (UNC)
Qualifying: Alex Okonkwo (Ohio State), Will Jansen (Georgia), Luca Pow (Wake Forest)
Charlie Robertson (Wake Forest) is not entered

Main draw: Savannah Dada-Mascoll (App State)
Qualifying: Gabia Paskauskas (Florida), Immi Haddad (USC)

If you're as confused as I am as to how Savannah is in the main draw ahead of some of the other names, I think draw selections were taking the ranked players and ordering them by WTN, followed by the unranked players ordered by WTN. How Savannah has the best WTN of all our college women is a head scratcher. That is not meant to be a slight on Savannah but a reflectíon on where I think she'd be relative to what some of the others have achieved through their junior and young adult careers.

Finally, apologies to anyone I've forgotten, missed or who's name I don't recognise. I'll do doubles later.

A near perfect day for the women in the opening pre-qualifying round at the All American Championships

Kristina Paskauskas got things off to a quick start with a 1 & 2 win

[21+] Daniela Piani got a 4 & 2 win in her maiden college match. More breaks of serve than holds in this match. Dani's opponent couldn't deal with her flat forehands often returning them into the net, although Dani got a few impressive winners with them too.

Jaquelyn Ogunwale came back from a set down to win in three

Millie Bissett just about got over the line in a third set tie-break, although she should have won it in two and the coach didn't see particularly happy having a long talk to her after the match with lots of arm waving.

Isabelle made light work of her opponent winning 0 & 3. She'll play Jaquelyn next.

Quickly followed by Eva also not messing around with a 2 & 2 win

Jasmine unfortunately couldn't make it perfect day, losing 6-7 6-7(2). She was a break up at 3-0* in the 1st set and a double break up at *4-1 in the 2nd set. Jasmine will come back in the doubles where she has a main draw WC.

Pre-qualifying doubles follows with Jaquelyn+ and Daniela+. Gabi Paskauskas+ also comes in as an alt, replacing the PQ1 seeds.

The men are still playing singles and I'll update when they're finished

On the mens side, Henry Jefferson was the only one to make it to the FPQR and won in 3 sets to pre-qualify. Derrick Chen and Ant Wright went out in PQR2 and the others went out in PQR1

On the women's side, in the FPQR Kristina Paskauskas beat the PQ3 seed 2 & 4, Daniela Piani beat the PQ17 seed 6-7(5) 6-2 6-0 and Millie Bissett also won to pre qualify. Isabelle lost a tight 3 setter against the PQ19 seed in the FPQR.

Earlier Isabelle had come back from being bagled to knock out Jaquelyn in PQR2. Eva Shaw also went out in PQR2. Eva's conqueror went on to lose to Daniela.

The women's qualifying draw is done. The mens still not out.

Not great draws for our women.

Millie draws the Q2 seed.
Kristina plays a Q17-32 seed who is a newcomer at NC State pitting her against her former coaches who will know how to play her.
The winners play each other

Daniela plays a Q17-32 seed. Should she progress she would play either Q5 seed Nao Nishino or NC State's Victoria Osuigwe for a place in the main draw.
Immi Haddad is Q6 seed but the 2 players in the other half of her section both have much better WTNs than her.

Gabia Paskauskas I presume has been moved to the main draw - the Q1 seed is 1 place below her in the rankings.

Will Jansen is the Q17-32 seed in the Q1 section and plays pre-qualifier and last year's teammate Preston Stearns (Ohio State)
Luca Pow is the Q17-32 seed in the Q2 section and also plays a pre-qualifier
Billy Blaydes (Auburn) plays Q5 seed
Pre-qualifier Henry plays the Q17-32 seed in the Q11 section

In doubles PQ1 seeds Matt Rankin+ pre-qualified, beating Ant Wright/Roan Jones in the opening round. PQ2 seeds Derrick Chen+ also pre-qualified. But PQ9 seeds Louis Bowden+ lost to PQ8 seeds in the FPQR.
Matt+ and Derrick+ join [Q1] Henry Jefferson+, Thomas Giles+ (DePaul) and [Q7] Alex Okonkwo+ (Ohio State) in qualifying. Derrick and Henry are in the same section

In women's doubles, Dani Piani 's successful introduction to college tennis continues by also pre-qualifying in doubles. Alts Gabia Paskauskas+ lost a MTB to the PQ9 seeds in the FPQR.
Dani+ plays Q9 seeds Erin Pearce+ (Vanderbilt). Also in qualifying Eva Shaw partners Millie Bissett and they are the Q6 seeds.
