Week 23 - ATP Challenger 125 - Lexus Open - Birmingham, Great Britain (grass)

The return of the green stuff next week!  biggrin  I can't wait!  jump.gif  The ATP's write-up:

Opening up the grass court season, the Edgbaston Priory Club will play host to a brand new ATP Challenger 125, the first outdoor professional tennis men's event to take place in Birmingham. A WTA event has been held at the club since 1982 and over the years, many greats of the game, from Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, have graced the courts.

The only confirmed Brits in the main draw, according to the LTA, are Billy & Dan Evans (WC).  Darts is showing Oliver Crawford, Ryan P, Charlie Broom & JPJ in qualies, with Ali Gray, Henry Searle, Stuart Parker, Giles Hussey, Arthur Féry, Aidan Mac, Harry W, Kyle, James Story, Ben Jones & Millen H among the ALTs.  Jay is showing as an ALT for the main draw.

Billy's also apparently down for the doubles alongside Marcus Willis, while Josh Paris has a new partner, Takeru Yuzuki (JPN).

10 Brits in qualification with Hussey, Edmund, Parker and McHugh getting wildcards

Annoyingly Terence Atmane (who would have been in main draw had he entered), turned up on site to take on of the Alt places. This probably stopped Story getting a wildcard as Parker would have been in directly

If I had to name where any British wins would come from, Id probably look at Ryan, Henry and Ali G as the possibles- not sure Id see any of the others winning but you never know.

Billy getting Rinky is a tough draw, dang. Jay could possibly beat Harris, Evo and JoMo getting qualifiers isnt a good thing, theyll have opponents with two grass wins under their belts in the first event on grass

Don't know who but at least 5 of the 10 in qualifying to win

There's a few of the opponents don't have great grass pedigree! Issue is our best seem to have drawn people who are :( I'm hoping I curse him in a good way but personally I'd have fathered Story get a WC than McHugh given recent form...

I'd agree re Story over McHugh. The WCs do have a look of going down the rankings

With the short grass season I just think it should be better thought out... I hope I'm wrong regarding McHugh and about the unluckiness of the draw because you need to maximise these few months! Also assume Fery and lofg are injured again... which if so is sad news! Both would be playing otherwise surely? Two of my favs that just can't stay well.

QR1:  (q2) Li Tu (AUS) WR 168 defeated Oliver Crawford WR 268 by 6-4 7-6(12)

Despite the tussle in the tie-break, from what I saw of the match, Tu never really looked like losing.
